Crochet Flower Beanie by Paula Rock
What is Being Made
The Flower Beanie is a versatile crochet hat designed to fit teens and adults in one size. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Paula Rock features a classic beanie construction with a decorative flower element, making it an ideal project for crafters looking to create a finished, wearable accessory with visual interest.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. Crochet is a fiber craft that uses a single hook to create interlocking loops of yarn, building fabric from the ground up in rows or rounds. The Flower Beanie employs circular construction, beginning with a magic ring or chain foundation and working outward in expanding rounds to create the crown and body of the hat.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginner-level crafters:
- Chain (CH) – the foundation stitch that creates a series of loops, used to start the project and for turning chains between rows
- Double Crochet (DC) – a tall, versatile stitch that forms the main fabric of the beanie, worked in increasing rounds to shape the crown
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – a medium-height stitch included in the pattern's stitch repertoire for construction variation
- Slip Stitch (Sl St) – used to join rounds seamlessly, creating a continuous circular fabric
Construction Details
The beanie begins with a foundation chain joined into a circle using a slip stitch. Subsequent rounds use double crochet stitches with strategic increases (working 2 stitches into single stitches) to expand the crown gradually. The pattern follows a structured increase sequence: the second round establishes 11 double crochets, the third round doubles this to 22 stitches, the fourth round increases to 33 stitches, and the fifth round continues the expansion pattern. This mathematical approach to increases ensures the hat maintains proper shaping and fit.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Flower Beanie requires 1 ball of Stylecraft Special Aran yarn (100g), with the pattern sample worked in Lipstick 1246 and Cream 1005 colorways. The yarn weight is Aran (also called medium worsted weight), a medium-weight yarn that works quickly and creates a fabric with good drape and structure suitable for hats.
Alternative yarn options include Red Heart Super Saver in Aran or medium worsted weight, or any brand of Aran yarn labeled as requiring a 5mm hook on the ball band. This flexibility allows crafters to choose from a wide variety of yarn colors and brands while maintaining consistent gauge and finished dimensions.
Tools and Notions
- Size 5mm (H) crochet hook – the primary tool for creating all stitches
- Tapestry sewing needle – used for weaving in yarn ends and any finishing seams
- Scissors – for cutting yarn
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 7 double crochet stitches by 3 double crochet rows equaling a 5cm (approximately 2-inch) square when worked with the 5mm hook and Aran yarn. Maintaining this gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished size. The one-size pattern is designed to fit both teenagers and adults comfortably, making it a practical project with broad appeal.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner difficulty project, the Flower Beanie is accessible to crocheters new to the craft. The pattern uses only basic stitches and straightforward construction techniques, with clear abbreviations and row-by-row instructions. The circular, expanding construction method teaches fundamental shaping principles without overwhelming complexity.
