Product Description
With the Florence Socks, I wanted to create an easy sock pattern with a delicate lace pattern that features the subtle tone of plant dyed yarn. The socks are knitted toe-up with a heel flap and gusset with the magic loop method. The lace pattern creates a sort of ribbing which gives the socks a good fit.
Florence Socks by Anja Heumann
What is Being Made
The Florence Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Anja Heumann. This pattern creates fitted socks with adjustable leg and foot lengths, available in two sizes. The finished leg circumference measures 7 to 7.5 inches (17.6 to 18.8 centimeters), making these socks suitable for average adult foot sizes. The design emphasizes delicate aesthetics while maintaining practical wearability through thoughtful construction.
Knitting Techniques and Construction Methods
The Florence Socks are constructed using the toe-up method, which allows knitters to try on the socks during the knitting process and easily adjust the foot length to their preference. This approach begins at the toe and works upward toward the leg opening. The pattern incorporates a heel flap and gusset construction, a traditional sock-shaping technique that creates a reinforced heel area and increases at the sides of the foot for proper fit and comfort. The socks are knitted using the magic loop method, a circular knitting technique that uses a single long circular needle to work small circumferences in the round without requiring double-pointed needles.
The designer recommends approximately 10 to 15 percent negative ease, meaning the finished sock circumference should be slightly smaller than the wearer's actual foot measurement. This creates a snug, supportive fit that prevents slouching and ensures the socks stay in place during wear.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout most of the sock is stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit fabric that creates a smooth, classic appearance. The defining design element is a lace pattern that runs vertically along the leg of the sock. This lace pattern is worked over either 10 stitches (for size 1) or 8 stitches (for size 2), with separate charts provided for each size to ensure proper stitch alignment. The lace pattern creates what the designer describes as a subtle ribbing effect, which provides gentle shaping and visual interest while maintaining the delicate aesthetic. The lace openwork creates small decorative holes and texture variations that showcase the beauty of the plant-dyed yarn.
Yarn and Materials
The Florence Socks pattern calls for 1 skein of Plant Dyed Sock Yarn by epipa, a specialty yarn composed of 75 percent virgin wool and 25 percent polyamide. This blend combines the warmth and elasticity of wool with the durability and stain resistance of synthetic fiber, making it ideal for socks that will receive regular wear and washing. The yarn provides 459 yards (420 meters) per 100-gram skein, offering ample yardage for a complete pair of socks. The recommended colorway is Lachs-Rose, a plant-dyed shade that features subtle, natural tones. The yarn weight is classified as both 3-ply and 4-ply, indicating a light to medium weight suitable for creating socks with good stitch definition and durability.
The pattern requires US 2 (2.75 millimeter) circular needles measuring 32 inches (80 centimeters) in length, which accommodates the magic loop method for working the small circumference of a sock leg. Additional notions include 1 stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, and scissors for cutting yarn.
Gauge and Finished Measurements
The recommended gauge is 34 stitches and 49 rounds to 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in stockinette stitch on US 2 needles after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for creating socks that fit correctly. The leg length is fully adjustable, allowing knitters to customize the height of the sock cuff to their preference. Similarly, the foot length is adjustable, enabling a perfect fit regardless of individual foot dimensions.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic sock construction. Knitters should be comfortable with circular needle techniques, reading lace charts, and managing the heel flap and gusset shaping. The magic loop method and lace pattern work require attention to detail and familiarity with yarn overs and decreases, but the straightforward overall construction makes this an achievable project for advancing sock knitters.
