Product Description

A fellow Raveller was kind enough to point out that one of the crosses in Row 14 of the Decrease Chart is opposite what is shown on the finished hat. The chart was updated, and a revised pattern uploaded on 11.30.2011, so any patterns purchased after that date will contain the correct chart.

A slouchy hat with a whole mess o’ twisted stitches, knit in fingering-weight yarn. Designed for Mira and Baah! yarns. Flavia is knit in the round from the brim up and features a variety of techniques including both ribbing and cables using twisted stitches. The twisted cable patterns for the main body of the hat and the decrease section are charted only. Skill level: advanced beginner to intermediate. Cabling without a cable needle is strongly recommended, but certainly not required, and some experience with knitting in the round, increasing, decreasing, cabling, twisted stitches and chart-reading may be helpful. Flavia Slouchy Hat by Beth Kling

What is Being Made

Flavia is a slouchy hat pattern designed by Beth Kling, featuring a twisted sensibility in its construction. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a relaxed, comfortable hat with a finished brim measurement of 17 inches (43.2cm) when unstretched and a depth of 9.25 inches (23.5cm). The slouchy silhouette offers a modern, casual aesthetic suitable for everyday wear.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting pattern of intermediate difficulty, worked primarily in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles. The pattern employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive look:

  • Twisted stitches: The design incorporates knit through the back loop (ktbl) stitches, which create a twisted effect that gives the hat its characteristic sensibility
  • Cable work: The pattern uses cable techniques, requiring a cable needle or spare double-pointed needle to manipulate stitches and create textured interest
  • Magic Loop method: For knitters preferring to avoid double-pointed needles, the pattern accommodates the Magic Loop technique using a longer circular needle
  • Stockinette stitch: The base fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, providing a smooth, classic foundation
  • Increases: Make one (purl) increases are used to shape the hat as needed

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for Baah! La Jolla yarn, a superwash merino fiber in 2-ply fingering weight. One skein provides 400 yards (365 meters) at 3.5 ounces (100 grams). The pattern as written uses approximately 256 yards (234 meters) or 2.3 ounces (64 grams) of yarn, leaving generous yardage for adjustments or experimentation.

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires multiple needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction:

  • US 1 (2.25mm) 16-inch circular needles for the initial cast-on and ribbed sections
  • US 3 (3.25mm) 16-inch circular needles for the main body of the hat
  • US 3 (3.25mm) double-pointed needles for working the crown decreases, or alternatively a US 3 (3.25mm) circular needle of sufficient length for Magic Loop knitting
  • Cable needle or spare double-pointed needle (approximately US 3 / 3.25mm) for cable work
  • Stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 7 stitches and 10 rows per inch (2.5cm) in stockinette stitch when knit flat on US 3 (3.25mm) needles and unblocked. Knitters should adjust needle size as necessary to obtain this gauge, as proper gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished measurements and fit of the slouchy hat.
