Product Description

Fish tail scarf is an easy and quick scarf. If you have any leftovers, please try it! At first please weigh the yarns, divide the half. We work increasing the each sides to grow the scarf until the first half of the yarns, then we work decreasing the each side to the end. So the size differs according to the yarn you use. There are 2 types of scarf by the ratio of increasing. (A: Larger version B: Thinner version). You can choose whichever you like.

Fish Tail Scarf by Takako Takiguchi

Project Overview

The Fish Tail Scarf is a beginner-friendly knitting project designed for crafters looking to create an elegant, tapered accessory from yarn leftovers or small quantities. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a distinctive fish tail silhouette through strategic increases and decreases worked symmetrically on both sides of the scarf.

What Is Being Made

A knitted scarf featuring a fish tail construction, where the scarf begins narrow, expands to its widest point at the midway mark, then tapers back to a narrow finish. The sample finished dimensions measure 20.5 cm in width and 106 cm in length for the thinner version. The final size remains flexible and adapts based on the yarn weight and yardage used, making this pattern highly adaptable to various yarn stash quantities.

Knitting Techniques and Construction Method

The Fish Tail Scarf employs a two-phase construction technique:

  • Increasing Phase: The scarf begins with a cast-on edge and progresses through the first half of available yarn while working increases on each side to gradually expand the width
  • Decreasing Phase: Once the midpoint is reached, the second half of yarn is worked with decreases on each side, tapering the scarf back to its original narrow width

This symmetrical shaping creates the characteristic fish tail aesthetic. The pattern offers two construction variations based on the ratio of increases used: Version A produces a larger, more dramatic silhouette, while Version B creates a thinner, more subtle tapered effect. Crafters can select their preferred proportion before beginning.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Fish Tail Scarf incorporates several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Knit (k): Basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric structure
  • Purl (p): Reverse knit stitch used in combination with knits
  • K2 P2 Ribbing: A classic two-by-two ribbed pattern used as the gauge measurement and primary stitch pattern, creating vertical columns of texture
  • Kfb (Knit Front Back): An increase technique that creates one new stitch by knitting into both the front and back loops of a single stitch
  • FDKC (Front Double Knit Cross): A cable cross technique where two stitches are slipped to a cable needle and held in front, two stitches are knitted, then the held stitches are knitted from the cable needle, creating decorative crossed texture

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Fish Tail Scarf pattern calls for light fingering weight yarn, though the designer notes that any yarn weight can be substituted. The sample uses approximately 230 meters (250 yards) of yarn weighing 60 grams. The pattern specifically references Malabrigo Yarn Sock in the Flavia colorway as the sample yarn, which typically provides 402 meters per 100-gram skein. Since the pattern works with yarn weight ratios rather than fixed yardage, crafters can successfully use leftover yarn from other projects or any light fingering yarn in their stash.

Needles and Notions

The pattern requires a 3 mm (US 2.5) circular needle to accommodate the knitting method. Circular needles provide flexibility for working flat or in the round depending on the construction method chosen. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.

Gauge

The working gauge is established at 32 stitches by 22 rows equals 10 centimeters when measured in k2 p2 ribbing. This gauge measurement helps crafters adjust needle size if needed to achieve proper fabric drape and finished dimensions, though the adaptive nature of this pattern means slight gauge variations remain forgiving.

Skill Level and Project Characteristics

Classified as a beginner-level project, the Fish Tail Scarf introduces fundamental knitting techniques without overwhelming complexity. The straightforward increase-and-decrease construction combined with basic stitches makes this pattern ideal for knitters developing their skills. The project's quick completion time and ability to utilize yarn scraps add practical appeal for both novice and experienced crafters seeking efficient stash-busting projects.
