What is Being Made

Finnoula is an advanced-level sweater featuring a striking combination of knitted and crocheted construction. This one-size garment showcases large crocheted motifs measuring 19 cm square, which are integrated into a knitted sweater body. The design measures 40 cm (15½ inches) in length and 60–80 cm (23½–31½ inches) in width, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for various body sizes.

Techniques and Construction Methods

Finnoula employs a mixed-craft approach, combining both knitting and crochet techniques in a single garment. The sweater body is constructed using knitting, while decorative motifs are created separately using crochet and then incorporated into the finished piece. This hybrid method requires proficiency in both crafts and careful attention to gauge consistency between the two techniques. The hem border is worked using crochet, providing a finished edge detail that complements the overall design aesthetic.

Stitches Used

Knitting stitches: The garment is worked primarily in stockinette stitch (st st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric base.

Crochet stitches: The pattern utilizes several crochet techniques, including:

• Chain stitch (ch) for foundation and structural elements
• Double crochet (dc) for building the motif fabric
• Double treble together (dtr2tog) for decreasing and shaping
• Double treble three together (dtr3tog) for additional shaping and texture variation

Materials and Tools

Yarn: Rowan Felted Tweed Aran in Clay 777 (as shown in the photographed sample). This aran-weight yarn provides structure and drape suitable for the garment's design. The pattern calls for 50 gm balls of yarn.

Needles and Hooks: The project requires multiple needle and hook sizes to achieve proper tension and construction:

• One pair of 4 mm (UK size 8 / US size 6) knitting needles
• One pair of 4½ mm (UK size 7 / US size 7) knitting needles
• One 4.50 mm (UK size 7 / US size 7) crochet hook

Tension and Gauge

Achieving correct tension is essential for this advanced project. The knitted sections should measure 18½ stitches and 24 rows over 10 cm when worked in stockinette stitch using 4½ mm needles. The crocheted motifs, worked with the 4.50 mm crochet hook, each measure 19 cm square. Maintaining consistent tension across both knitting and crochet work ensures that the motifs integrate seamlessly with the knitted body and that the finished garment achieves the intended dimensions and drape.
