Product Description
Filigreen is a triangle shawl with a difference. Simple stripes are overlaid with lines of slipped stitches and mini-cables to create a dynamic and eye-catching filigree effect reminiscent of other places and times.
It is ideal for showing off two strongly contrasting or complementary skeins, or try a solid paired with a speckled or gradient yarn for dynamic results. Sample used 300m of Blackberry and 260 of Moss.
The size of the shawl is adaptable, and both the straight and the crossing line sections can be continued to any size.
The design can be worked entirely from the written pattern, or from charts with some notes.
Suits heavy fingering to worsted weight yarn in any yardage between approx 500m and 1000m.
Filigreen Knitted Shawl by Nim Teasdale
What is Being Made
Filigreen is a snuggly triangle shawl designed by Nim Teasdale as an intermediate-level knitting project. This downloadable PDF pattern is ideal for knitters who want to showcase two contrasting or complementary yarn skeins, or experiment with solid yarns paired with speckled or gradient options for dynamic visual results. The finished shawl measures 150x63cm (60x25 inches) after blocking.
Knitting Techniques and Stitch Work
The Filigreen shawl features an unusual and eye-catching filigree stitch pattern created through a carefully orchestrated combination of techniques. The construction alternates stripes of stockinette stitch with reverse stockinette stitch, establishing a textural foundation. Overlaid on top of these contrasting stripe sections are lines of slipped stitches and mini-cables, which create the dynamic filigree effect that gives this shawl its distinctive visual character and name.
This layering of techniques—combining basic stockinette variations with decorative slipped stitches and cable elements—makes the pattern suitable for intermediate knitters who have mastered fundamental stitches and are ready to work with more complex stitch combinations.
Yarn and Materials
Filigreen is designed to work with heavy fingering to worsted weight yarn, offering flexibility across multiple yarn weights including 4-ply, DK, and sport weights. The pattern accommodates adaptable yardage requirements depending on the yarn weight selected.
The sample shawl pictured in the pattern was knitted using 565 meters (620 yards) of Rosy Green Wool Cheeky Merino Joy, combining 300 meters of Blackberry (main colour) with 260 meters of Moss (secondary colour). This two-colour approach effectively showcases the filigree stitch pattern's visual complexity.
Needles and Gauge
Gauge and needle size will vary depending on the yarn weight selected for your project. The sample shawl was worked on 3.5mm (US size 4) needles. Knitters should swatch their chosen yarn to determine appropriate needle sizing and achieve the desired fabric characteristics and finished dimensions.
Pattern Flexibility
The Filigreen pattern offers sizing that is adaptable to any colour and contrast combination, allowing knitters creative freedom in yarn selection while maintaining the integrity of the filigree stitch pattern and overall shawl structure.
