Product Description

This Field & Sky Pullover sweater is knit flat then adorned with your favorite farm animal buttons. The two-color design allows you to personalise your creation without the effort of intarsia or stranded colorwork. I chose cow, chicken, rabbit, and carrot buttons, but you could select buttons depicting tractors, birds, pigs, or just about whatever the wearer is fond of. The sleeve length should land just below the elbow, keeping it from being dragged through ketchup and letting a long sleeve tee or shirt layer catch the dirt instead. The wide neck opening means no struggling. The sample shown was knit by Clare Hamill.

Field & Sky Pullover by Evin Bail O'Keeffe

What is Being Made

The Field & Sky Pullover is a knitted children's sweater designed by Evin Bail O'Keeffe. This pullover features a charming two-color design that celebrates farm and nature themes, finished with decorative buttons depicting farm animals or other motifs of the wearer's choosing. The design prioritizes comfort and practicality for active children, with thoughtfully proportioned sleeve length and a wide neck opening for easy dressing.

Design Features and Customization

The sweater's two-color construction allows for personalization without complex colorwork techniques. Rather than requiring intarsia or stranded colorwork skills, the color changes are incorporated in a straightforward manner. The sample design showcases farm animal buttons including cow, chicken, rabbit, and carrot motifs, though the pattern encourages makers to select buttons reflecting the wearer's interests—whether tractors, birds, pigs, or other themes.

The elbow-length sleeves are specifically designed to sit just below the elbow, a practical choice that keeps the garment from dragging through food and allows layering with long-sleeved shirts or tees underneath to catch dirt and wear. The wide neck opening eliminates the struggle of pulling the sweater over the head, making it ideal for children.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This pullover is knit flat, meaning it is worked on straight needles rather than in the round. Flat knitting is then seamed together to create the finished garment. This construction method is particularly beginner-friendly, as it eliminates the need for circular needle skills or managing stitches across multiple needles simultaneously.

Yarn Weight and Difficulty Level

The Field & Sky Pullover is worked in DK weight yarn, a lightweight to medium yarn that creates a fabric with good drape and breathability—ideal for a children's pullover. The pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent project for knitters new to garment construction. The straightforward two-color design, flat knitting construction, and absence of advanced colorwork techniques ensure accessibility for newer crafters.

Materials Required

This project requires DK weight yarn in two colors to achieve the Field & Sky design, along with appropriate knitting needles sized for DK yarn. Finishing requires decorative buttons in your chosen theme—farm animals, tractors, birds, or other designs—to embellish the completed sweater.
