Fergus Fair Isle Bear by Monica Russel
What Is Being Made
Fergus is a characterful teddy bear designed as a knitted toy project. The finished bear stands approximately 51cm (20in) tall from the soles of the feet to the top of the ear, with an arm span of approximately 41cm (16in) and leg length of approximately 18cm (7in). This is a stuffed toy suitable for knitters of all ages, from tiny tots to adults, combining traditional toy-making with decorative Fair Isle colorwork.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Fergus Fair Isle Bear pattern employs Fair Isle knitting, a traditional colorwork technique that uses multiple yarn colors within the same row to create patterned designs. The pattern includes both charts and written instructions to accommodate different knitter preferences. Fair Isle colorwork typically involves stranding yarn colors across the back of the work and switching between colors to build the pattern on the front.
The pattern is suitable for intermediate-level knitters. While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided materials, Fair Isle projects generally incorporate basic stitches such as knit and purl, with the complexity arising from managing multiple colors and following the colorwork charts rather than from advanced stitch techniques.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for DK-weight yarn, requiring approximately 116 meters (127 yards) per 50 grams (1¾ ounces) in total. The design uses seven distinct yarn colors:
- Dark Grey: 2 balls (primary color)
- Pink: partial ball
- Grey: 1 ball
- Brown: 1 ball
- Off White: partial ball
- Yellow: partial ball
- Black: small amount
The pattern notes that yarn shades may vary from those shown in the photograph, allowing for creative color substitution while maintaining the Fair Isle design structure.
Equipment Required
Knitters will need a pair of 4mm (US 6, UK 8) knitting needles to work this project. Additional equipment includes a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming pieces together, dressmaker's pins for holding pieces in place during assembly, and a long darning needle for stuffing and final closure work. Good quality toy stuffing is essential to fill the bear and achieve the proper shape and firmness.
Pattern Notes
An important consideration for this toy project is that tension is not of the utmost importance, provided that the stuffing does not show through the knitted fabric. This relaxed approach to gauge makes the pattern more accessible to knitters who may struggle with achieving precise tension, while still requiring attention to fabric density to prevent stuffing visibility.
