Product Description
Wool is such a great insulator, and this 8 inch potholder places layers of felted wool between your hand and your hot pots and pans. It’s also pretty enough to brighten up your kitchen as a hot pad or a wall hanging.
This pattern is optimized for use only with worsted weight feltable wool.
If you choose to substitute yarn that will not felt, please do not use the finished object as a potholder! The fabric will not shrink flat, the gaps will not close up and you may burn yourself. However, it would work as a wall hanging or as a hot pad.
Felted Crocodile Flower Potholder by Joyce Lewis
What Is Being Made
The Felted Crocodile Flower Potholder is a functional and decorative kitchen accessory designed to protect hands from hot cookware. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a multi-layered potholder that combines practical insulation with aesthetic appeal. The finished piece features a crocodile stitch flower motif and can serve as a traditional potholder, hot pad, or wall hanging depending on the crocheter's preference and yarn choice.
Felting Process and Insulation
The potholder's primary function relies on the felting process, which transforms crocheted wool into a dense, insulating fabric. Wool is an excellent natural insulator, and this pattern takes advantage of wool's unique property of shrinking and matting when exposed to heat and moisture during felting. The felting process closes gaps in the crocheted fabric and creates multiple protective layers between the hand and hot pots and pans. Important: This pattern is optimized exclusively for feltable wool yarns. Substituting non-feltable yarn will result in a fabric that does not shrink properly, leaving gaps that compromise safety as a potholder. Non-feltable yarn versions may only be safely used as wall hangings or decorative hot pads without direct contact with hot cookware.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate project employs the crocodile stitch, a textured crochet technique that creates a dimensional, scale-like appearance reminiscent of crocodile skin. The pattern utilizes double crochet (dc) stitches as the foundation stitch for the gauge and overall fabric structure. The crocodile stitch technique adds visual interest and texture to the finished potholder, transforming it into a decorative piece suitable for kitchen display. The use of a larger-than-normal hook size is intentional for this felting project, as it creates a more open fabric structure that will properly shrink and felt when processed.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for Valley Yarns Northampton in worsted weight, a 100% wool yarn available in 247-yard/100-gram skeins. Three colors are required:
- Color A (Brown Heather): 25 grams
- Color B (Gold): 25 grams
- Color C (Light Green Heather): 15 grams
When substituting yarn brands, crocheters must select colorfast wool to prevent fading and color bleeding during the felting process. The yarn choice directly impacts both the finished appearance and the safety of the potholder.
Hook Size and Gauge
This pattern requires a Size I/9/5.50mm crochet hook, which is larger than the hook typically used for worsted weight yarn. This deliberate sizing choice accommodates the felting process, allowing the fabric to shrink evenly and completely. The pattern gauge is 12 stitches and 6 rows of double crochet measured over 4 inches. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the potholder to felt correctly and reach its intended finished dimensions and functionality.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this project requires familiarity with basic crochet stitches, particularly double crochet and the crocodile stitch technique. Crocheters should also be comfortable following multi-color patterns and have experience with or willingness to learn the felting process, as proper felting technique is critical to the potholder's safety and function.
