Product Description
Quick easy project that works up quickly in an evening. It's also a great way to use up scraps of wool.
The pattern includes easy to follow instructions for both the Acorn and the Mushroom.
The Felted Acorn bowl measures approximately 6 cm (2 1/2") across and 5 cm (2") high. The Felted Mushroom bowl measures approximately 6 cm (2 1/2") across and 6 cm (2 1/2") high. If you prefer you can make both projects without felting them (the finished size will be slightly larger).
Felted Acorn and Mushroom Catch-all by knot•sew•cute
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern from independent designer knot•sew•cute provides instructions for creating two charming felted containers: an acorn and a mushroom catch-all. These small decorative vessels are perfect for storing buttons, beads, or other craft supplies, combining functional storage with whimsical woodland-inspired design.
What You'll Create
The pattern includes designs for both an acorn-shaped container and a mushroom-shaped container. Each piece is crocheted in worsted weight yarn and can be enhanced through optional felting techniques to create a soft, textured finish that adds depth and durability to the final pieces.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This project uses fundamental crochet techniques suitable for crafters with basic to intermediate skills. The pattern employs the following stitches:
- Chain (ch) - Used to create foundation chains and increase height within rows
- Single crochet (sc) - The primary stitch for building the structure of both containers
- Slip stitch (sl st) - Used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
- Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) - A decrease stitch that reduces stitch count to shape the pieces and create the rounded forms characteristic of acorns and mushroom caps
- Yarn over (yo) - A fundamental technique used in conjunction with other stitches
Materials and Tools
The pattern calls for Patons® Classic Wool Merino (100% wool, 20 g per 41 meters) or comparable worsted weight yarn. Specific color combinations are provided:
- Acorn design: Natural Mix and Chestnut Brown
- Mushroom design: Natural Mix, Bright Red, and Aran
Essential tools include a 3.50 mm crochet hook (or the size needed to match the specified gauge) and a yarn needle for weaving in ends. For those interested in adding texture and durability, the pattern optionally suggests a 38 gauge all-purpose felting needle and foam pad for wet felting the finished pieces.
Gauge and Construction Standards
The pattern specifies a gauge of 9 single crochet stitches and 9 rows measuring 5 cm (2 inches) square when worked with a 3.50 mm crochet hook. Maintaining this gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions and proportions of both the acorn and mushroom containers.
Felting Enhancement
While felting is optional, the pattern design accommodates this technique beautifully. The use of 100% wool yarn makes these pieces ideal candidates for wet felting, which can soften the crocheted fabric, create a more cohesive appearance, and add subtle texture to the finished containers. The optional felting supplies allow crafters to customize the final look and feel of their pieces.
