Product Description
I knitted this hat-and-scarf set on the fly during charity knit nights at my local yarn store. In case anyone else was interested in making it, I redacted the pattern from a combination of photographs and my own memory. This unfortunately means that I can’t vouch for the precision of the measurements or the yarn required, but there should still be enough information in these instructions for you to be able to make the garments yourself.
Feather-and-Fan Set by Kathleen Sperling
Project Overview
The Feather-and-Fan Set is a coordinated knitting project consisting of a hat and scarf designed by independent designer Kathleen Sperling. This set was originally created during charity knit nights at a local yarn store and has been adapted into a downloadable pattern for crafters interested in recreating the design. The pattern is offered as a free resource, making it an accessible option for knitters looking to expand their project collection.
What Is Being Made
- Hat: A tween-sized hat with a finished circumference of approximately 13 inches when unstretched. The hat is designed to stretch considerably when worn, providing comfortable fit and flexibility.
- Scarf: A coordinating scarf with a finished width of approximately 5 inches, intended to be worn as a matching accessory to the hat.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project suitable for beginner-level knitters. The pattern combines fundamental knitting techniques with decorative stitch work to create an elegant finished set. The design emphasizes the feather-and-fan stitch pattern, a classic lace motif that creates an open, flowing fabric with visual interest.
Yarn and Materials
The set is worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight that provides good stitch definition for lace patterns while remaining accessible for beginner knitters. Appropriate knitting needles for DK weight yarn are required to complete the project. The designer notes that leftover yarn from the set could potentially be used for additional projects, such as mittens.
Pattern Notes
This pattern was reconstructed by the designer from photographs and memory, as it was originally created improvisationally during social knitting sessions. While the designer acknowledges that precision of measurements and yarn requirements cannot be absolutely guaranteed, sufficient detail is provided for crafters to successfully complete both garments in the set. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and includes provisions for future updates, such as additional instructions for coordinating mittens if the designer chooses to develop them.
