Product Description
Fast Forward is a scarf suitable for just about anyone! It’s a 2x2 ribbed scarf with a unique cabled motif at either end. The 2x2 ribbing knits up quickly and the cabled ends turn it into something very special.
This pattern takes between 375 - 500 yards of worsted weight wool and can be adjusted in length by knitting more or less ribbing in the middle of the scarf.
The pattern contains both written and charted versions of the cables.
Fast Forward is knit outwards from a provisional cast on in the center.
Fast Forward Scarf by Natalie Servant
What Is Being Made
Fast Forward is a sophisticated knitted scarf designed by Natalie Servant. This advanced-level project creates a finished scarf measuring 66 to 84 inches long and 5.5 inches wide, using less than 200 grams of worsted weight yarn. The scarf features a classic 2x2 ribbing construction as its primary stitch pattern, complemented by beautiful angled cable motifs positioned at each end for visual interest and design complexity.
Construction Technique
This scarf employs an innovative construction method that begins with a provisional cast on placed at the center of the piece. The knitter then works outward from this central point in both directions, creating a unique approach to scarf construction. This technique allows for symmetrical design and eliminates the need for a traditional cast-on edge at one end. The pattern provides both charted and written instructions, giving knitters flexibility in how they prefer to follow the directions.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern is 2x2 ribbing, which creates vertical columns of alternating knit and purl stitches. This ribbed construction provides excellent elasticity and a professional finish. The scarf is distinguished by angled cable motifs at each end, which are presented in both charted and written formats. The cable work adds textural depth and visual sophistication to the design, making this an advanced project suitable for experienced knitters comfortable with cable techniques.
Materials and Gauge
Fast Forward accommodates multiple yarn options within the worsted weight category, all 100% wool for durability and warmth. Suggested yarns include Quince & Co. Lark (134 yards per 50-gram skein), Brooklyn Tweed Shelter (140 yards per 50-gram skein), and Cascade 220 Heathers (220 yards per 100-gram skein). The pattern requires approximately 375 to 500 yards of yarn depending on desired length.
Knitters should work to a gauge of 32 stitches and 18 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in 2x2 ribbing when blocked. Needles should be US5 (3.75mm) or US6 (4mm) in either circular or straight format. Additional notions include a darning needle for finishing.
Yarn Weight and Difficulty
This pattern uses aran-weight yarn (worsted weight classification), which creates a fabric with good drape and warmth. The advanced difficulty level reflects the cable motif work and the center-outward construction technique, making this scarf ideal for knitters with solid foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns and unconventional construction methods.
