Product Description
My twin rib journey led me to design a long tunic with a cowl neck and hourglass shape. I had been thinking about winter – and imagining a sweater that would be warm enough to wear without a coat and comfortable enough to wear all day long. I decided to design a very basic sweater and add a pocket for practicality. Voila! Farfalle was born.
While shaped to fit, farfalle was designed to have enough room to make it a very comfortable wear. As I worked on it, I decided to make it more fun by giving it an oversized pocket to balance an oversized turtleneck cowl. The sleeves are unusually long and can be worn long or turned up.
Farfalle is a straightforward knit, and it is among the easiest in the collection. Done in pieces from the bottom-up, the sweater is shaped with simple decrease and increase stitches along the seams. The sleeves are knit separately and set in, the cowl is worked in the round, and the pocket is added in finishing.

Farfalle Sweater by VERSACIKNITS
What is Being Made
The Farfalle is a knitted sweater designed by independent designer VERSACIKNITS, available in nine sizes ranging from XS to 5X. This garment features a classic construction with a finished chest measurement from 32 inches (81cm) in the smallest size up to 63¼ inches (161cm) in the largest size, with corresponding length measurements between 28¼ and 30½ inches (72–77cm). The design includes a collar detail and an integrated pocket, making it a versatile everyday sweater suitable for various body types and proportions.
Construction Techniques
The Farfalle employs a bottom-up construction method, which is a traditional and beginner-friendly approach to sweater knitting. The garment is constructed in separate pieces: the front panel, back panel, sleeves, and pocket are each worked individually from the bottom upward. Once all pieces are completed and blocked to shape, they are joined together. The collar is then picked up from the neckline and worked in the round, and the pocket is sewn onto the finished garment. This modular construction approach allows knitters to work at their own pace and make adjustments as needed before final assembly.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout the Farfalle is Stockinette stitch, a fundamental knitting pattern that creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side. Stockinette stitch is worked by alternating knit rows and purl rows when working flat (back and forth), or by knitting every round when working in the round. This stitch is ideal for beginners as it forms the foundation of most knitted garments and allows the drape and texture of the yarn to shine through. The pattern notes emphasize the importance of checking gauge in Stockinette stitch to ensure proper fit and fabric characteristics.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Farfalle is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that creates a refined, drapey fabric ideal for sweaters. The recommended yarn is Madelinetosh Tosh DK, which is composed of 100% superwash merino wool. Superwash merino wool is a luxury fiber that has been treated to be machine-washable, making it practical for everyday garments while maintaining the softness and breathability of merino. Yardage requirements range from approximately 1,300 yards (1,190 meters) for the smallest size to 2,440 yards (2,230 meters) for the largest size.
The pattern calls for US size 6 (4mm) straight and circular needles, or whatever needle size is needed to obtain the correct gauge. The use of both straight needles (for working flat pieces) and circular needles (for working the collar in the round) is standard for this construction method. Additional notions required include stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and stitch holders or waste yarn to temporarily hold stitches while working other sections of the garment.
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10cm) in Stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is critical for proper fit, as even small variations can result in a sweater that is significantly too large or too small. Knitters are advised to take time to swatch and check their gauge before beginning the project, adjusting needle size up or down as needed to match the specified gauge.
Skill Level
The Farfalle is classified as a beginner-level knitting project, making it an excellent choice for knitters who are new to garment construction. The use of basic Stockinette stitch throughout, combined with straightforward bottom-up construction and standard shaping techniques, provides an accessible introduction to sweater knitting without overwhelming complexity.
