Product Description

These socks would be ideal for intermediate sock knitters who would like to try cable knitting.

The design for these socks was inspired by my Fankle Shawl. For some time now, I have wanted to design sock patterns that would match my four free shawl patterns. The thought of knitting cables can be slightly daunting to some knitters, but this is a very straight forward cable pattern to follow: the cables only appear once in every four rounds. In between the cables, there is a little twisted lace pattern too.I’m also hoping to help knitters understand how cuff down socks with a traditional gusset develop with this very simple yet elegant sock pattern.

Pattern contains links to four tutorial videos on my YouTube channel to help with various techniques used while knitting these socks.

What is Being Made

Fankle Socks are a pair of cuff-down socks designed for intermediate knitters who want to explore cable knitting techniques. The design draws inspiration from the designer's Fankle Shawl, creating a coordinated aesthetic for knitters interested in matching accessories. These socks feature a medium finished foot circumference of 8 inches (20.3 cm) with a finished stitch count of 64 stitches, making them suitable for average adult sock sizing.

Techniques Used

The primary technique featured in this pattern is cable knitting, presented in a beginner-friendly approach for those new to working cables in sock construction. The cables are strategically spaced, appearing only once every four rounds, which prevents the pattern from becoming overwhelming while still delivering visual impact. Between the cable repeats, knitters will work a twisted lace pattern, adding textural variety and elegance to the finished sock. The pattern also teaches the fundamental sock construction method of cuff-down construction with a traditional gusset, making this an educational project for understanding how sock shaping develops from cuff to foot.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout the pattern is stocking stitch, which provides the smooth, classic fabric base for the socks. Cable stitches are incorporated at regular intervals to create the dimensional cable pattern. The twisted lace pattern interspersed between cables adds openwork detail and visual interest. The gusset shaping uses standard decreases to create the heel turn and foot fit, while the cuff typically employs ribbing for elasticity and comfort at the leg opening.

Materials

This pattern requires 342 meters (374 yards) of Drops Fabel yarn in shade 102 Pink, a 4-ply weight yarn that provides the appropriate gauge and drape for sock knitting. The recommended needles are 2.25mm double-pointed needles in a set of five, which are standard for sock construction and allow for seamless, circular knitting around the leg and foot. Additional notions include one stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats. The recommended gauge after blocking is 32 stitches and 44 rows in stocking stitch over 4 inches, which knitters should verify before beginning to ensure proper finished sizing.

Pattern Summary

Fankle Socks offer intermediate knitters a straightforward introduction to cable work within the context of sock knitting. The pattern's elegant simplicity—with cables appearing infrequently and twisted lace filling the space between—makes cable knitting feel accessible rather than intimidating. By combining cuff-down construction with traditional gusset shaping, the pattern serves as both a beautiful finished project and an educational tool for understanding sock architecture. The 4-ply yarn weight and 2.25mm needles create a refined, well-fitting sock suitable for everyday wear, while the coordinating design with the Fankle Shawl appeals to designers seeking cohesive knitwear collections.
