Materials Worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You'll need three colours of yarn, mixed black (1/4 of a 100 yard skein), grey (1/2) and white (1/5). For the eyes I've used 8 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). Lopi colour numbers: black 0005, grey 0058 and white 0051.
Falun the Badger Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
Falun is a charming amigurumi-style crochet badger toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk. This finished stuffed animal measures approximately 5.5 inches (14 centimeters) when sitting, making it a perfect small companion or decorative piece. The pattern creates a three-dimensional badger figure worked entirely in the round using continuous spiral crochet techniques.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a crochet project suitable for beginner crocheters. The entire doll is constructed using the spiral crochet method, where rounds are worked continuously without joining. This technique creates a seamless appearance and is ideal for amigurumi projects. The designer recommends using a stitch marker to clearly mark the beginning of each round, advancing the marker as new rounds commence to maintain structure and clarity throughout the construction process.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern employs standard American crochet terminology throughout. Key construction involves working in continuous rounds rather than traditional joined rounds, which streamlines the building process. The pattern incorporates color changes to create the badger's distinctive markings. Color transitions are strategically placed within stitches, with the designer providing color-coded instructions for complex changes to guide crocheters clearly. The pattern advises changing colors in the final loop of a stitch, ensuring the new color appears on the hook as the next round begins.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn. The designer specifically recommends using a fuzzy yarn to achieve the best aesthetic results for the badger's texture. The recommended yarn used in the original design is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool fiber that provides both the desired fuzziness and durability for a toy that will be handled and cherished. The final size of the completed badger depends on both the yarn weight selected and the individual crocheter's tension, making it useful to experiment with proportions if substituting yarns.
Pattern Format and Customization Notes
This is a downloadable PDF pattern provided by independent designer Son's Popkes. Before beginning, crocheters should read through the entire pattern to familiarize themselves with the instructions and terminology used. The designer notes that because finished size is dependent on yarn choice and individual crochet tension, it may be worthwhile to experiment with eye size recommendations despite the provided guidance, allowing for personalized variations in the final toy's appearance.
