Product Description
It’s coming on the time of year where I start bringing hot cocoa and hot cider to the bonfires I enjoy with my husband, my sister, brothers and our friends.
It’s become a tradition to get together once a month, to listen to the music we love while laughing with each other under the night time, country sky until we each see a shooting star.
The stitch pattern on the brim of this hat reminds me of those stars.
This is a mega quick knit and great stash buster project!
Falling Stars Knit Hat by Melissa Schaschwary
Project Overview
Falling Stars is an intermediate-level knit hat pattern designed by Melissa Schaschwary. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished hat suitable for most adults with a head circumference of 20 inches (50.5 cm). The design accommodates adjustments for larger head sizes through needle gauge modifications, making it a versatile option for various fit preferences.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a classic adult knit hat featuring decorative star motifs. The hat is constructed using a top-down approach with circular knitting, creating a seamless crown and body. The finished garment is designed to fit comfortably across most adult head sizes, with optional button embellishments available for added customization.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Circular knitting: The pattern employs 16-inch circular needles for the main body, allowing for seamless construction and even fabric distribution
- Double-pointed needle (DPN) work: As the crown decreases, knitters transition to US size 13 (9mm) DPNs to manage the decreasing stitch count in the final rounds
- Stitch marker placement: Five stitch markers are used throughout the pattern to track pattern repeats and construction sections, essential for maintaining the star design alignment
- Gauge adjustments: The pattern provides guidance for modifying needle size to achieve proper fit, allowing knitters to customize the hat for different head sizes
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Falling Stars pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with shaping decreases:
- Stockinette stitch: The primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows, providing a smooth, classic knit appearance
- Knit (K) and purl (P) stitches: Basic stitches that form the foundation of the pattern and create the star motif design
- Knit two together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping the crown
- Purl two together (P2tog): A decrease worked on purl-side rows for consistent shaping
- Slip, slip, knit (SSK): A left-leaning decrease that provides balanced shaping alongside K2tog decreases
- Make one (M1): An increase stitch used to add stitches where needed for the star pattern or shaping adjustments
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Falling Stars pattern calls for super chunky weight yarn, specifically one 100-gram skein of Tahki Yarns Montana or a comparable wool yarn with equivalent yardage of approximately 130 yards per skein. This substantial yarn weight creates a quick-knit project with excellent stitch definition for showcasing the star motif.
Needle requirements: The pattern specifies US size 13 (9mm) circular needles in a 16-inch length for the main body construction, paired with four US size 13 (9mm) double-pointed needles for the crown decreases. This needle size works in proportion with the super chunky yarn to achieve the specified gauge of 10 stitches and 14 rows over 4 inches of stockinette stitch.
Additional supplies: Knitters will need five stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, and optionally two 1.25-inch buttons for decorative embellishment of the finished hat.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate pattern, Falling Stars requires knitters to be comfortable with circular needle techniques, crown decreasing, and reading stitch abbreviations. The pattern incorporates standard decrease stitches and stitch marker management, making it accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to advance beyond basic projects.
