Product Description
With a tiny lacy wing motif and fairy wings added to the heel, these baby fairy shoes are made in 3 sizes (0 - 3 months, 3 - 6 months, 6 - 9 months). Knitted flat on two needles using DK/8 ply yarn, these are so quick and easy to make that they would be a good pattern for a last minute baby shower gift.
I used DK superwash wool but other soft wool-mix, cashmere or alpaca yarns would be fine too, though 100% cotton may be a bit heavy for the wings to sit up properly.
There are 3 sizes. Sole measurements (unstretched) are: 7 cms/2.75”, 8 cms/3.25 “, 9.5 cms/3.75” This is approx amounts of DK/8 ply yarn needed for the 3 sizes: 30 (35, 40) gms; 60 (70, 80) m / 66 (77, 88) yds
Fairy Shoes by Rian Anderson
What is Being Made
Fairy Shoes are charming knitted booties designed for babies, featuring a delicate lacy motif and decorative wings. This project produces miniature footwear available in three graduated sizes to fit infants from newborn through nine months old. The shoes are finished with small buttons as functional closures, making them both decorative and practical for little ones.
Project Overview
These baby fairy shoes are knitted flat on two needles rather than in the round, allowing for straightforward construction suitable for intermediate knitters. The wings are crafted as separate components and then attached to the back seam of each shoe, adding a whimsical finishing touch. The three available sizes accommodate different stages of infant development: 0–3 months, 3–6 months, and 6–9 months, with sole measurements ranging from 7 cm to 9.5 cm.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The primary stitch used throughout the project is stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for small garments. The design incorporates a lacy motif as a decorative element, adding visual interest and a delicate aesthetic appropriate to the fairy theme. Working flat on two needles means knitters will need to manage seaming, which is accomplished using a tapestry needle for neat, invisible joins.
Materials and Tools Required
- Yarn: DK/8 ply weight yarn in quantities of 30 grams (approximately 66 yards) for the smallest size, 35 grams (77 yards) for the medium size, and 40 grams (88 yards) for the largest size
- Needles: One pair of 4 mm (US size 6) needles for knitting the main shoe pieces
- Notions: Two small buttons, approximately 1 cm in diameter, for closures
- Additional tools: Tapestry needle for sewing seams and attaching wings; needle and strong thread for securing buttons
Gauge and Tension
The pattern specifies a tension of 20 stitches and 27 rows to 10 cm when working stocking stitch on 4 mm needles with DK/8 ply yarn. Because these are very small items, the pattern includes helpful guidance to test tension as you knit: after completing the first 12 rows, measure the middle 10 cm across the width to verify stitch count. Adjusting needle size up or down ensures the finished shoes fit properly, preventing shoes that are too large or too small.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with fine yarn, manage gauge on small pieces, and execute decorative lacy elements. The small scale requires attention to detail and careful tension management, making it an excellent intermediate project for those seeking to refine their precision and finish work.
