Fairisle Baby Outfits by Monica Russel
Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer Monica Russel features a charming set of three coordinated baby pieces: a patterned cardigan, matching bootees, and a pixie hat. Worked in DK weight yarn using the fairisle colorwork technique, this intermediate-level project creates heirloom-quality garments perfect for newborns through 18-month-old infants. The coordinated designs make an attractive gift set that friends and family will admire.
What You'll Make
- Patterned Baby Cardigan – A button-front cardigan featuring fairisle colorwork throughout, available in four sizes from newborn to 12-18 months with lengths ranging from 20cm to 29cm
- Matching Bootees – Coordinating footwear worked in the same fairisle color palette
- Pixie Hat – A classic baby hat design that completes the outfit set
Knitting Techniques
This pattern employs fairisle colorwork, a traditional stranded knitting technique where two colors are carried across the row to create intricate patterned designs. The fairisle method adds visual interest and texture while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters. The pattern incorporates ribbed edgings for structure and includes shaping techniques appropriate for baby garment construction.
Stitches Used
- Knit and Purl Ribbing – K2, P2 rib creates elastic edges on the cardigan back
- Moss Stitch – A textured stitch variation used in pattern sections
- Stockinette Stitch – Abbreviated as ST in the pattern, this fundamental stitch creates smooth fabric in single-color sections
- Fairisle Colorwork – Two-color stranded knitting creates the distinctive patterned rows throughout the garments
Materials Required
This pattern uses UK Alpaca yarn, a premium blend of 70% superfine alpaca and 30% blue-faced Leicester wool, worked in DK weight. The yarn provides softness and warmth ideal for delicate baby skin. The color palette includes seven distinct shades: Midnight Blue (Colour A), Sapphire (Colour B), Wine (Colour C), Lilac (Colour E), Damson (Colour F, requiring two 50g balls), and Mustard (Colour G). Each color typically requires one 50g ball except Damson. The pattern calls for 4.5mm needles for the main fabric and includes six buttons for the cardigan front closure.
Sizing Information
The pattern accommodates four baby sizes: newborn, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, and 12-18 months, with corresponding length measurements of 20cm, 23cm, 26cm, and 29cm respectively. This range ensures the outfit grows with the baby or allows customization for different infant sizes.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable managing multiple yarn colors. The fairisle technique requires attention to tension and color management, making it an ideal next step for knitters progressing beyond beginner projects.
