Product Description

This shawl is simple, lightweight and perfect for cool spring and summer evenings. It is made entirely out of basic crochet stitches. The sample shawl is made with It's a Wrap Rainbow by Red Heart. This color changing cotton yarn makes a beautiful fade without weaving in a lot of ends. If using the suggested yarn, it only requires one cake.

I hope you love this shawl as much as I do! If you make one, please consider making a ravelry project page and sharing on Instagram with #fadingskyshawl.

Fading Sky Shawl by Samsqueak Designs

Project Overview

The Fading Sky Shawl is a beginner-friendly crochet shawl design created by Samsqueak Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a triangular wrap featuring a beautiful gradient colorway that transitions across the finished piece. The shawl is an ideal project for crocheters looking to create a lightweight, wearable accessory with visual interest through color rather than complex stitch work.

What You'll Create

This pattern yields a finished shawl with generous dimensions suitable for draping across the shoulders. Before blocking, the shawl measures approximately 52 inches in wingspan with a depth of 23 inches from tip to top. After blocking, the wingspan expands to approximately 58 inches with a depth of 24 inches, allowing the fabric to open up and display the stitch pattern more prominently.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

The Fading Sky Shawl is constructed using fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The primary stitch used throughout the pattern is the moss stitch, also known as granite stitch, which creates a dense, textured fabric with excellent drape.

Moss Stitch Construction

The moss stitch consists of alternating single crochets and chain stitches worked in a specific sequence. In each row of moss stitch, single crochet stitches are always worked into the chain spaces created in the previous row, rather than into the tops of stitches. This technique creates a consistent, woven appearance that is both visually appealing and structurally sound. The pattern instructions are written out in standard crochet terminology for maximum clarity, making it accessible for beginners.

Stitch Abbreviations Used

  • CH – Chain
  • SC – Single Crochet
  • DC – Double Crochet
  • SK – Skip
  • ST(S) – Stitch(es)
  • V ST – V-Stitch (Double Crochet, Chain 1, Double Crochet worked in the space indicated)

Yarn Requirements and Specifications

The pattern calls for one cake of Red Heart It's a Wrap Rainbow yarn, or approximately 650 yards of light sport weight or fingering weight yarn. The Red Heart It's a Wrap Rainbow yarn provides the gradient colorway effect that gives this shawl its distinctive "fading sky" appearance, with colors transitioning smoothly throughout the cake.

The pattern is designed with flexibility in mind—it can be worked with any yarn weight, though adjustments to hook size will be necessary to maintain proper fabric characteristics. Using heavier yarn will require a larger hook, while lighter yarns may require a smaller hook to achieve the intended drape and finished dimensions.

Hook Size and Gauge

The recommended hook size is 4.5mm for the specified yarn weight. The pattern gauge in moss stitch is 14 single crochet and chain-1 spaces across by 24 rows, which equals a 4-inch square.

The pattern notes that exact gauge is not critical for this project, which is reassuring for beginners. However, gauge will affect the total amount of yarn required to complete the shawl. Crocheters working at a looser tension may need additional yardage, while those with tighter tension may use less yarn than specified.

Blocking and Finishing

The shawl benefits significantly from blocking, which opens up the moss stitch pattern and adds approximately 6 inches to the wingspan. Blocking also adds approximately 1 inch to the depth measurement, allowing the fabric to reach its full potential in terms of drape and stitch definition.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner-level pattern, the Fading Sky Shawl is an excellent choice for crocheters new to shawl construction. The straightforward moss stitch requires only basic crochet knowledge, and the simple construction method makes it an ideal project for building confidence and developing consistent tension.
