Product Description
As the Covid quarantine continued, I found myself going from complex knitting to my favorite beginner pattern, granny's dishcloth. The repetition of garter stitch found my mind wandering to face masks, which everyone was sewing. Knit masks didn't make sense due to holes in knit fabric, but that could be remedied by a filter. The result was this pattern. Written as a mask for adult women, it includes adjustments for children's & men's sizes.
The mask has a knit back pocket for filter material like paper towel & coffee filters. I used cotton, acrylic & wool blends for the samples, with gauges between 16-18 stitches = 4"/10cm. The ear hooks can be elastic or crochet. Included are a crochet neck cord & garter stitch ear protector. It's time to raid your yarn stash - all samples took only 50 grams,
Warning: Nonsurgical masks are not designed to protect you from disease. They can help protect others from your speech, sneeze and cough droplets. If everyone wore a mask, we'd all be a bit safer.
Knit Face Mask with Filter Pocket by KittyKnits
What is Being Made
This pattern creates a functional knit face mask featuring an integrated filter pocket design. The mask is constructed to provide a practical solution for everyday wear, with the added benefit of accommodating replaceable filters for enhanced protection. The design moves beyond single-layer knit masks to offer a more substantial protective garment suitable for various occasions.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project designed for beginners, making it accessible to crafters new to the hobby. The pattern incorporates fundamental knitting techniques that build foundational skills while creating a wearable, practical item. The design philosophy emphasizes simplicity and meditative repetition, allowing knitters to work through the project without requiring advanced technical knowledge.
Stitches Used
The pattern features garter stitch as a primary stitch, which creates a textured, reversible fabric through alternating knit rows. The design also incorporates increases and decreases, essential shaping techniques that allow the mask to conform to facial contours and create the filter pocket structure. These fundamental stitches work together to build both the mask body and the specialized pocket component.
