Eyes of the Insane Furballs Knitted Dishcloth
What is Being Made
Eyes of the Insane Furballs is a knitted dishcloth design created by independent designer Tomato68Evony. This project produces a finished dishcloth measuring 10" x 6" (25.5 cm x 15 cm) before blocking. The design is suitable for crafters with intermediate knitting experience and can be worked in either cotton or acrylic yarn depending on preference and desired finished characteristics.
Knitting Techniques
This dishcloth pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques to create its distinctive design. The pattern utilizes Judy's magic cast on to begin the project with 12 stitches, a technique valued for creating seamless, flexible edges ideal for flat projects like dishcloths. The pattern includes both written instructions and a knitting chart, allowing crafters to follow their preferred method of pattern reading.
Color work is incorporated using standard stripe and intarsia techniques worked in the round. When working with multiple colors, yarns are carried at the end or start of each round. The pattern references jogless knitting considerations, a technique used to minimize the visible step that can occur when changing colors at the beginning of rounds, resulting in a more polished final appearance.
Stitches Used
The Eyes of the Insane Furballs pattern utilizes fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches, including:
- Knit (k) – the basic stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (p) – the reverse of the knit stitch, used to create textural variation
- Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase technique that creates two stitches from one
- Pass slipped stitch over (psso) – a decrease method used to reduce stitch count
- Pass previous stitch over (ppso) – an alternative decrease technique
These stitches are worked in stockinette stitch as the primary fabric structure, which is measured at a gauge of 24 stitches x 36 rows over 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) before blocking.
Materials and Tools
This pattern offers flexibility in yarn fiber choice. Crafters can select either non-mercerized 100% cotton weighing 1.1 oz. (30.8 g) with 49.2 yards (45.0 m), or acrylic yarn weighing 0.8 oz. (23.1 g) with 38.5 yards (35.5 m). Both options are worked in worsted weight, providing a medium-weight fabric suitable for dishcloth durability and absorbency.
The pattern requires circular or double point knitting needles in size 3.50 mm (US 4), with one pair or one set needed to complete the project. Additional tools include a measuring tape, scissors, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing.
