Product Description
This shawl pattern was designed so that each of the triangular sections of the shawl is worked in almost the same way but because of the positioning of the panels they look very different. The columns of lace go every which way! ;)
The pattern itself is entirely written out and includes instructions for both a 2 panel version that produces a triangular shawl and a 3 panel version that produces a 3/4 square shawl. Each wears differently and has a distinct look. The instructions are surprisingly simple with a 6 row set-up and then a 4 row repeat. It looks like you are doing something super fancy but it is an easy lace pattern.
Speaking of lace, combining lace and variegation is a significant challenge and I addressed this by choosing to use very linear and geometric lace columns to stand out among all of the color in the yarn. Of course these patterns would also look great in solid or speckled colors but they can handle the crazy too!
Every Witch Way Shawl by Barbara Benson
What is Being Made
Every Witch Way is a knitted shawl pattern designed by Barbara Benson as part of The Fiber Seed's Swifties program. This beginner-friendly shawl project showcases the designer's approach to working with variegated yarn in a lace construction.
Design Inspiration and Yarn Selection
The pattern was developed in collaboration with The Fiber Seed, a yarn company that produces yarn entirely in the USA. The shawl is designed to work beautifully with The Fiber Seed's Sprout yarn, a 90% merino and 10% nylon fingering weight yarn (4-ply) available in generously sized skeins. The pattern specifically addresses the challenge of matching heavily variegated yarn colors to lace stitch patterns, making it an excellent choice for knitters working with multicolored or color-changing yarns.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches Used
Every Witch Way employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level knitters. The pattern incorporates the following stitches and techniques:
- k (knit): The basic knit stitch that forms the foundation of the fabric
- kfb (knit front and back): An increase technique that creates two stitches from one by knitting into both the front and back loops of a single stitch
- k2tog (knit 2 together): A decrease technique that combines two stitches into one
- kYOk (knit, yarn-over, knit): A lace-creating technique where you knit into a stitch, create a yarn-over, and then knit into that same stitch again, producing an eyelet or openwork effect
- m1L (make one left): An increase method performed by picking up the strand of yarn running between two stitches, inserting the left-hand needle from front to back, and then knitting through the back loop of the created stitch
- pm (place marker): A stitch marker used to denote pattern repeats or important sections within the knitting
Materials
The recommended yarn for this pattern is The Fiber Seed Sprout, a fingering weight (4-ply) yarn composed of 90% merino wool and 10% nylon. This fiber blend provides durability and elasticity ideal for lace shawl construction. Standard knitting needles appropriate for fingering weight yarn are required to complete the project.
