Product Description

A simple hat with two different options; a beanie worked in a wonderfully textured lacy pattern or a slouchy toque with lace panels and pompoms. The all-over stitch pattern on the Lacy Beanie is perfect for highlighting hand dyed and variegated yarns as the texture helps reduce pooling. The slouchy toque has a relaxed fit that won’t crush your ‘do and who doesn’t love little pompoms?!

Both versions of this hat are worked from the bottom up in the round. Both written and charted instructions are included for the lace pattern and decrease section.

Evernia: Two-Design Knit Hat Collection by Tori Gurbisz

Evernia is a downloadable knitting pattern featuring two distinct hat designs created by independent designer Tori Gurbisz and presented by Lachesis and Co. This intermediate-level project offers knitters the flexibility to choose between two complementary styles: the Lacy Beanie and the Pompom Slouch. Both designs are worked in sport-weight yarn and utilize fundamental knitting techniques suitable for knitters with some experience.

Lacy Beanie Design

The Lacy Beanie is a fitted hat style that showcases lace detailing through its construction. This design is worked using a 3x1 rib stitch pattern, which creates vertical texture and elasticity ideal for a close-fitting beanie. The ribbed construction provides both structure and stretch, ensuring the hat maintains its shape while accommodating various head sizes.

Sizing: Available in four sizes—XS (15.5 inches/39.5 cm), S (17 inches/43 cm), M (18.5 inches/47 cm), and L (19.75 inches/50 cm)—to fit head circumferences ranging from 17 to 22+ inches (43 to 56+ cm).

Gauge and Needles: The Lacy Beanie is worked at a gauge of 23 stitches and 32 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in 3x1 rib using US 6/4mm needles, or the size needed to obtain proper gauge.

Yarn Requirements: This design calls for approximately 137 yards (XS), 150 yards (S), 164 yards (M), or 178 yards (L). The pattern is shown in Madelinetosh Tosh Merino DK, a 100% Merino wool yarn with 225 yards per skein, shown in the colorway Lichen.

Pompom Slouch Design

The Pompom Slouch offers a relaxed, oversized silhouette enhanced with a decorative pompom accent. This style is constructed using stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit stitch pattern that creates a smooth, classic fabric with a V-patterned texture on the right side. The slouchy fit provides comfortable ease and a contemporary aesthetic.

Sizing: This design is available in four sizes—XS (16.75 inches/42.5 cm), S (18.25 inches/46.5 cm), M (19.75 inches/50 cm), and L (21.25 inches/54 cm)—to fit head circumferences from 17 to 22+ inches (43 to 56+ cm).

Gauge and Needles: The Pompom Slouch is worked at a gauge of 21 stitches and 32 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch using US 6/4mm needles, or the size needed to obtain proper gauge.

Yarn Requirements: This design requires approximately 143 yards (XS), 156 yards (S), 168 yards (M), or 182 yards (L). The pattern is shown in Malabrigo Superfine Merino, a 100% Merino wool yarn with 168 yards per 50-gram skein, shown in the colorway Persia.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

Both designs in the Evernia collection employ circular knitting techniques, as indicated by the gauge measurements provided in rounds rather than rows. This method creates seamless hats worked in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and resulting in a polished, professional finish. Knitters will work from the brim upward, gradually shaping the crown to fit the head.

The use of sport-weight yarn in both designs creates lightweight, breathable fabric suitable for transitional seasons or layering. Sport weight offers a balance between the delicacy of fingering-weight yarns and the quicker gauge of worsted-weight options, making these projects moderately paced for completion.
