Product Description

This easy DIY tree can be made by any level crocheter and offers a chance to involve kids of all ages.

A stick forms the trunk and crocheted circles form the foliage. This pattern uses nine circles, but you can adjust the number to fit the height of your trunk. Experiment with different shapes, colors, and types of yarn to vary the look of your forest.

The pattern is geared towards advanced beginners and uses American crochet terminology. Text instructions and stitch charts are both included in the pattern.

Use medium-weight (worsted weight) yarn, a stick or dowl about 1/4” 6 mm in diameter, and a block of foam or wood as a base. You’ll also need craft glue or hot glue.

What Is Being Made

The Evergreen Tabletop Tree is a decorative crochet project designed to create a charming tabletop evergreen tree suitable for seasonal or year-round display. The finished tree measures approximately 15 inches [38 cm] tall with a diameter of 7 inches [18 cm] at its widest point. This beginner-friendly design combines crocheted circles with a simple wooden support structure to create an attractive dimensional tree decoration.

Design and Construction

This pattern uses nine crocheted circles stacked and arranged around a central wooden trunk to form the tree's foliage. The circles decrease in size from bottom to top, creating a classic evergreen silhouette. The design is flexible, allowing crafters to adjust the number of circles used to customize the tree's proportions and final appearance. A wooden stick or dowel approximately ¼ inch [6 mm] in diameter and 15 inches [38 cm] tall serves as the tree trunk, while a wooden block, Styrofoam base, or similar sturdy foundation provides stability and support.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This beginner-level crochet project focuses on creating circular shapes that form the tree's canopy. The pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for crafters at any skill level, including children. The use of multiple circles demonstrates how basic crochet shapes can be combined to construct dimensional decorative objects. The straightforward construction method makes this an excellent project for introducing new crocheters to three-dimensional garment and decoration assembly.

Materials Required

Yarn: Worsted-weight yarn totaling approximately 150 yards [137 m]. The sample shown uses Red Heart with Love, a 100% acrylic yarn available in 7 ounce [198 g] skeins with 370 yards [338 m] per skein. Color 1562 Jadeite was used for the sample, though any worsted-weight yarn in desired colors can be substituted.

Tools and Notions: A size J [6 mm] crochet hook or size appropriate to obtain proper gauge. A wooden stick or dowel measuring approximately ¼ inch [6 mm] in diameter and 15 inches [38 cm] tall forms the tree trunk. A wooden block, piece of sturdy Styrofoam, or comparable sturdy base wide enough and heavy enough to support the trunk height is essential for stability. Hot glue or craft glue secures the crocheted elements to the trunk and base. Optional embellishments include a small piece of burlap and approximately 24 inches [61 cm] of twine for decorating the base.

Skill Level and Accessibility

Designed as a beginner crochet project, the Evergreen Tabletop Tree offers an accessible entry point for new crafters and provides an engaging activity suitable for involving children of all ages in the creative process. The straightforward construction and simple techniques make this pattern ideal for family crafting sessions or introducing young crafters to crochet fundamentals.
