Escalate Cowl by Ashley Knowlton
What is Being Made
Escalate is a moebius cowl, a innovative neck accessory that combines mathematical intrigue with practical warmth. This cowl features a distinctive twisted construction that creates a single-sided surface, making it a unique statement piece that can be worn multiple ways. The finished cowl measures 20 inches (51 centimeters) in circumference and 6 inches (15.25 centimeters) in height, providing comfortable coverage for the neck and shoulders. The design is engineered to be completed in a single evening, making it an efficient project for crafters seeking quick results without sacrificing style or complexity.
Techniques and Construction
The Escalate cowl employs circular knitting techniques worked in the round, which creates a seamless, tubular fabric ideal for neck wear. The defining characteristic of this design is the moebius construction, a mind-bending shaping technique that creates a twisted loop with only one continuous surface. This advanced shaping method requires careful attention during the cast-on and joining process to achieve the proper twist before working the main body.
The pattern incorporates textured knit and purl stitches arranged in an orderly weave pattern. This combination of knit and purl stitches creates visual interest and dimensional texture across the fabric surface. The textured pattern not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to the fabric's structure and drape, ensuring the cowl maintains its shape and fits snugly around the neck.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch – the fundamental stitch forming the primary fabric structure
- Purl stitch – used in combination with knit stitches to create the textured pattern
- Textured pattern – an orderly arrangement of knits and purls that creates visual and tactile dimension
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Approximately 80 yards (75 meters) of bulky weight yarn is required for this project. The pattern is demonstrated in Knit Picks Sierra (now known as Knit Picks Cadena), a premium blend composed of 70% wool and 30% alpaca. This fiber combination provides warmth, softness, and elasticity. The original sample uses the colorway Hollyberry. One skein of Knit Picks Sierra contains 110 yards (101 meters) per 100 grams, providing ample yardage for this compact project.
Needles and Notions: The project requires a US 8 (5mm) circular needle measuring 40 inches (100 centimeters) long for the main body of the cowl. A US 11 (8mm) needle is needed specifically for the cast-off edge to create a finished bind-off. Additional tools include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and at least one stitch marker to track the beginning of rounds during circular knitting.
Gauge and Customization
The pattern specifies a gauge of 10 stitches and 20 rounds measuring 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches (6.5 centimeters by 6.5 centimeters) in the textured pattern. However, the designer notes that gauge is not crucial to this particular project, offering flexibility for crafters. This relaxed approach to gauge allows knitters to experiment with different needle sizes and yarn weights to achieve a fabric texture and drape they personally prefer. This customization option makes Escalate accessible to knitters of varying experience levels and those working with alternative yarn weights or fiber contents.
Difficulty Level
Escalate is rated as an intermediate difficulty project. While the basic stitches employed are fundamental, the moebius construction and the coordination required for circular knitting on a long circular needle position this pattern above beginner level. Knitters should be comfortable with cast-on methods, working in the round, and maintaining consistent tension before approaching this design.
