Ernie the Trouble Maker Knitted Toy by Phoenixknits

What is Being Made

Ernie the Trouble Maker is a playful knitted toy character designed by Phoenixknits. This mischievous stuffed toy stands approximately 5 inches high and is intended to be a pocket-sized companion. According to the designer's whimsical description, Ernie is a troublemaker who lives in your pocket and encourages you to do silly things like knitting when you should be working or playing computer games. Each handmade Ernie is unique, reflecting the individual crafter's personal touch and yarn choices.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic skills. The pattern involves fundamental knitting techniques including casting on, increasing stitches, and turning work mid-row to create shaping. The toy construction uses the turning technique, which allows crafters to work on specific sections of stitches while temporarily ignoring others, creating three-dimensional shaping essential for toy construction.

An important note for crafters: when using fun fur or eyelash yarn, the wrong side of the work becomes the right side of the finished toy. This reversal is crucial for achieving the proper fuzzy appearance of the final piece.

Stitches Used

  • Cast on: The foundation row that creates the initial stitches on the needle
  • Inc1 (increase one): A technique to increase stitch count by knitting into the next two stitches together as one, creating an additional stitch
  • Tog: Knitting or purling the next two stitches together as one stitch to decrease stitch count
  • Ss (Stocking Stitch): The fundamental alternating pattern of knitting one row followed by purling one row, creating the classic smooth knit fabric texture
  • K (knit stitch): The basic knit stitch used throughout the pattern
  • P (purl stitch): The reverse of the knit stitch, used to create stocking stitch and texture variation
  • Turn: A technique where you knit the stated number of stitches and then turn your work around, ignoring the stitches you have not yet knitted and working only on these stitches in subsequent rows

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for 3mm knitting needles and fun fur or eyelash type yarn. For the body, Phoenixknits used Sirdar Foxy Badger yarn, requiring less than 50 grams. The designer also incorporated black and light brown mohair type yarn knitted together, using approximately 25 grams for additional color and texture details.

Alternatively, crafters can substitute any fun fur or eyelash type yarn of similar weight, allowing for creative color variations while maintaining the toy's characteristic fuzzy appearance. The pattern begins with casting on 7 stitches and immediately increases to 14 stitches in the next row by working an increase into every stitch, demonstrating the rapid shaping techniques used in toy construction.
