Eridani Lace-Edged Knit Tee by Claire Slade
What Is Being Made
Eridani is a charming cropped knit tee featuring delicate lace edging along the hem and matching lace sleeves. Designed by independent designer Claire Slade, this top combines classic stockinette construction with decorative lace details for a contemporary, feminine silhouette. The garment is intentionally cropped in length, though knitters have the flexibility to extend the body by continuing in stockinette stitch beyond the lower lace edging to reach their desired length before the underarm shaping begins.
Fit and Sizing
Eridani is designed with a relaxed, comfortable fit and should be knit with at least 4 inches (10 centimeters) of positive ease. This means your finished bust measurement should be at least 4 inches larger than your actual bust measurement to achieve the intended drape and wearability. The sample shown in the pattern was knit in Malabrigo Arroyo yarn and worn with exactly 4 inches of positive ease at the bust, demonstrating the intended proportions.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Primary Construction Method: The main body of Eridani is worked in stockinette stitch, the fundamental knit fabric created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side. This creates a smooth, classic appearance that serves as the perfect canvas for the lace details.
Lace Work: The defining design elements of this top are the lace-edged hem and matching lace sleeves. Lace knitting involves strategic yarn overs and decreases that create decorative openwork patterns and add visual interest to the finished garment. The lace edging provides an elegant contrast to the solid stockinette body.
Construction Method: The pattern is worked using circular needles, which allows for seamless knitting in the round. This construction technique eliminates side seams and creates a more polished, professional finish.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Yarn Weight: Eridani is designed for sportweight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that creates a delicate, drapey fabric ideal for warm-weather garments. The yardage requirements range from 720 yards (658 meters) for the smallest size up to 1,480 yards (1,353 meters) for the largest size, depending on which of the eleven available sizes you select.
Recommended Yarn: The sample garment was knit in Malabrigo Arroyo, a popular sportweight yarn known for its softness and beautiful color range.
Needles: The pattern calls for three different circular needle sizes to accommodate gauge changes throughout the construction:
- 3.5mm / US 4 in 16-inch (40 centimeter) length for ribbing or initial stitches
- 3.75mm / US 5 in 32-inch (80 centimeter) or shorter length for body shaping
- 4mm / US 6 in 32-inch (80 centimeter) or shorter length as the middle-sized needle for stockinette gauge
Additional Notions: You will need 2 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, as well as waste yarn or stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches during construction.
Gauge and Finished Measurements
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches by 24 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when measured in blocked stockinette stitch using the middle-sized needles (4mm / US 6). Achieving this gauge is essential for the garment to fit as designed. The pattern is available in eleven different sizes, each with corresponding finished measurements provided in the pattern document.
Skill Level
Eridani is rated as an intermediate-difficulty knitting project. While the stockinette construction is straightforward, the lace edging and sleeve details require comfort with lace techniques, including yarn overs and decreases. Knitters should have experience reading lace charts and managing stitches on circular needles before beginning this project.
