Eric the Elephant Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

Eric the Elephant is a pocket-sized knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry. This adorable stuffed animal project creates a small, portable companion perfect for carrying on adventures. The finished toy is worked primarily in stockinette stitch and features a charming elephant design suitable for gifted knitters seeking an intermediate-level project.

Craft and Technique Overview

This is a knitting pattern for creating a three-dimensional toy through strategic shaping. The design employs fundamental knitting techniques including increases and decreases to form the elephant's body, head, and limbs. The pattern uses increases to expand stitches where needed for shaping and decreases to taper sections, creating the dimensional form required for a stuffed toy.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch – the primary stitch throughout most of the pattern, creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric
  • Knit stitches (k) – basic knit stitches forming the foundation of the fabric
  • Purl stitches (p) – used as needed for pattern variation
  • Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase technique that creates one additional stitch by knitting into both the front and back loop of a single stitch
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease technique that combines two stitches into one, used for shaping the toy

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for approximately 50 grams of Grey DK weight yarn. The sample shown was knitted in 100% acrylic yarn, though this specific yarn has been discontinued. Amanda Berry recommends substituting with Stylecraft Special DK or Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, both available in 100% acrylic and offered in a wide range of colors for customization.

Needles and Notions: A pair of 3.25mm (US 3) single-pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm are required for working the DK weight yarn. Additional supplies include a darning or tapestry needle for seaming the finished pieces together, toy filling (several large handfuls recommended) for stuffing the completed elephant, and two 6mm toy safety eyes for facial features.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond absolute beginners. The combination of stockinette stitch, increases, and decreases requires solid foundational skills and familiarity with basic shaping techniques.
