Product Description

This bonnet will stand out from the crowd, it is a guaranteed compliment magnet and it is a fashion statement on its own! This pattern involves a lot of stitch counting and it is not an easy or a quick knit, yet you do not have to be an experienced Entrelac knitter to be able to make it. This pattern is for intermediate or very adventurous knitters.

This is not a super easy pattern and this is not a quick knit. But don’t be afraid! If you have never knit anything in Entrelac before, it might test your patience more than once! It is not very difficult though – it just takes some time to get used to it and you will have to keep counting the stitches all the time.

You will need yarn (up to 30 grams for the smallest size and up to 130 grams for the largest size) and knitting needles to obtain the gauge. Since this bonnet is knit flat, you can use any knitting needles you like. Also you will need a darning needle to weave in ends and to sew the back of the hat.

Entrelac Bonnet by Agnese

What is Being Made

The Entrelac Bonnet is a sophisticated hat design created by Agnese Iskrova of My Cherry Blossom Knits. This bonnet is described as a fashion statement and compliment magnet, offering a standout aesthetic. The pattern is available in multiple sizes to accommodate different ages: newborn (0–6 months), 6–12 months, 2–4 years, 5–10 years, 10 years to adult, making it a versatile design suitable for babies, children, and adults alike.

Techniques Used

The primary technique featured in this bonnet is Entrelac knitting, an advanced colorwork and texture method that creates an interlocking, woven appearance. Entrelac involves knitting small rectangular blocks that are worked in alternating directions and colors, producing a distinctive three-dimensional effect. While the pattern is designed for intermediate knitters or very adventurous beginners, it does require patience and careful stitch counting throughout the project. First-time Entrelac knitters should expect a learning curve, though the pattern is structured to be achievable without prior Entrelac experience.

Stitches Used

The bonnet is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, which serves as the foundation for the Entrelac blocks. Stockinette stitch creates a smooth, classic knit fabric with a distinctive V-pattern on the right side. The Entrelac technique itself requires picking up stitches and working blocks in stockinette while managing the directional changes inherent to the method. Consistent stitch counting is essential throughout the pattern to maintain the integrity of the interlocking block structure.

Materials and Specifications

This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that produces a refined drape suitable for bonnets. Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest newborn size requires approximately 30 grams of yarn, while the largest adult size requires up to 130 grams. The recommended gauge is 20 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch, which should be checked before beginning to ensure proper fit and finished dimensions. Standard knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn are required, though the pattern does not specify needle size explicitly in the provided content.

Difficulty and Pattern Notes

This is an intermediate-level knitting pattern that requires patience and attention to detail. The designer emphasizes that while the Entrelac Bonnet is not exceptionally difficult, it is time-intensive and demands consistent stitch counting. The pattern is not recommended for quick projects, but rather for knitters willing to invest time in mastering the Entrelac technique. The downloadable PDF format allows knitters to reference instructions at their own pace while working through the blocks.
