Still doing it but very well written as I have never done mosaic before
Product Description
This pattern is for a mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.
Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”.
To do the monarch in the colors shown in the sample image, you will need 3 colors - one for the background (tan), one for the outline (black), and then one for the butterfly color (orange). If you want to add the optional embroidered French Knot spots, you will also need a small amount of white. This pattern can also be done just using 2 colors of yarn - one for the background & butterfly, and then one for the outlines. You can also use various colors if you want to do striping or a gradient.
This is a great way to use up scraps! For the sample image, you would need approximately 2 oz of the black, and 1 oz each of the tan & orange.
Pattern is in US crochet terms.
Entomology Collection Square - Monarch Butterfly Mosaic Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Entomology Collection Square - Monarch Butterfly is a decorative crochet square featuring a mosaic crochet design of a monarch butterfly. This pattern is part of the Entomology Collection by designer Cyndie Birdsong and is suitable for use in multiple projects including cushions, table settings, and other home décor applications. The square showcases detailed colorwork through the mosaic crochet technique, creating visual interest and texture in a finished piece.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern utilizes mosaic crochet, a technique that creates interesting shapes and texture through strategic stitch placement and color changes. Mosaic crochet works by using graph charts to guide stitch placement, allowing crocheters to build detailed images and patterns. The technique involves reading charts to determine where to place stitches and change colors, creating a finished square with defined imagery. While mosaic crochet can initially seem confusing when reading graph charts, this pattern is designed with instruction clarity in mind to help crocheters of varying experience levels understand the process.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern employs standard crochet stitches combined with mosaic crochet methodology. Crocheters should have foundational experience recognizing stitches and understanding crochet terminology to successfully complete this project. The mosaic technique relies on graph chart interpretation to guide stitch placement and create the monarch butterfly design within the square format.
Materials and Yarn Weight
This pattern is designed to work with Aran weight and Worsted weight yarn, providing flexibility in yarn selection. A crochet hook appropriate for the chosen yarn weight is required. The use of multiple colors is essential to achieve the mosaic crochet effect and create the detailed monarch butterfly imagery.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as Intermediate difficulty. While mosaic crochet is presented in an accessible way within the instructions, prior crochet experience and familiarity with stitch recognition and terminology is recommended for successful completion.
Pattern Format
The Entomology Collection Square - Monarch Butterfly is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, created by independent designer Cyndie Birdsong in October 2020.
