Product Description
This 100% reversible pattern can be made as a cowl or a scarf. It's easy knitting, because it's mostly garter stitch. The pattern is made with stockinette stitch and reverse stockinette stitch triangles at regular intervals.
It's perfect for a luxury yarn with a bit of sheen. The silk in Stitch Sprouts Yellowstone makes the triangles shine in the light as it moves.
Sample is 8.5" wide and 38.5" around and was made with 1 full skein of Stitch Sprouts Yellowstone (80% merino, 20% silk,) in Ulysses.
This pattern would be suitable for any DK to worsted weight yarn, although the yardage and gauge would be different than the sample.

What Is Being Made
The Embossed Triangles is a reversible cowl or scarf featuring decorative embossed triangle motifs throughout the design. This versatile accessory measures 38.5 inches (98 cm) in circumference and 8.5 inches (21.5 cm) in width, making it suitable for wearing as either a cowl or a traditional scarf. The fully reversible construction means both sides of the finished garment display identical patterning, eliminating the need to worry about which side faces outward.
Techniques and Stitch Work
This knitting project is constructed primarily using garter stitch, a fundamental knitting technique that creates a textured, reversible fabric by knitting every row. The decorative triangles are achieved through the Ulysses stitch pattern, which creates embossed texture within the garter stitch base. The pattern operates on a 13-row repeat, which is central to the reversible nature of the design. Because of this repeat structure, the first instance of row 1 appears on one side of the garment, while the next instance of row 1 appears on the opposite side, ensuring that both faces of the cowl or scarf are equally attractive and patterned.
The project uses a provisional cast-on technique with smooth waste yarn, which allows for a seamless join when the two ends are grafted together to form the cowl shape. A darning needle is required for this finishing step.
Yarn and Materials
The Embossed Triangles pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility for different fiber preferences and finished fabric characteristics:
- DK or sport weight yarn: Approximately 100 grams (roughly 1 skein) is required. The sample was knitted using Stitch Sprouts Yellowstone, a blend of 80% merino and 20% silk containing 285 yards (261 meters) per 100 grams.
- Aran or worsted weight yarn: These heavier yarn weights are also suitable options for the pattern, allowing crafters to adjust the fabric density and drape according to preference.
Needles and Gauge
For DK or sport weight yarn, US 5 (3.75 mm) needles or the size needed to achieve proper gauge are recommended. The target gauge is 22 stitches and 32.5 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when working the textured garter stitch in the Ulysses stitch pattern. Achieving correct gauge is important for obtaining the specified finished dimensions.
Skill Level and Customization
Classified as a beginner-level project, the Embossed Triangles is accessible to knitters new to patterned work, as garter stitch is one of the most fundamental and forgiving knitting techniques. The pattern is highly customizable: the width can be adjusted by adding or removing increments of 14 stitches, and the length can be modified as needed, allowing crafters to create a cowl or scarf that perfectly suits their intended use and personal preferences.
