Elphabette Children's Pullover by Mary Annarella
What is Being Made
Elphabette is a munchkin-sized pullover sweater designed by Mary Annarella, inspired by the heroine from Stephen Schwartz's musical "Wicked". This classic-fitted children's pullover features a scooped neckline, raglan three-quarter length sleeves, and decorative lace edges. The sweater is intended to be worn with 0–2 inches of positive ease at the bust and is available in five sizes ranging from 21 to 29 inches in finished bust measurement.
Construction Technique
Elphabette is knit seamlessly from the top down, beginning at the neck and working downward to the hem. This top-down construction method allows for easy customization of length and eliminates the need for seaming, resulting in a smooth, comfortable garment. The raglan sleeve shaping is integrated into the main body during the knitting process, creating clean lines and a well-fitted silhouette.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout the body of the sweater is stockinette stitch (stst), which creates a smooth, classic fabric. The sweater incorporates a lace pattern on the edges, which measures 26 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches when blocked and unstretched. This lace detailing adds visual interest and delicate texture to the neckline and sleeve edges.
Gauge and Sizing
The stockinette stitch gauge is 25 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches when worked on a size 4 needle (3.5 mm) and measured after blocking. Finished bust measurements are available in five sizes: 21.1, 23, 25, 26.9, and 28.8 inches. A detailed schematic on page 4 of the pattern provides additional final measurements for all sizes.
