The Elfie Twins stand at approximately 8 inches or 20cms. They are knitted flat and assembled. The feet, legs, body and head is knitted as one piece, ears and arms are knitted separately. Girlie Elfie has little pig tails poking from under the brim of her hat and a sweet fluted skirt. Little boy Elfie has big breeches, needs to grow a little to keep them up! They are both worked flat on 2 knitting needles using Double Knitting/lightweight worsted yarn, only take small amounts of leftovers from your stash and are a quick knit. I always include a full making up guide with lots of photos of each step of assembly and a couple of quick tips to help you create a sweet Elfie.
The Elfie Twins is a downloadable knitting pattern for creating a pair of small knitted elf dolls. Each elf is a complete toy figure designed as a beginner-friendly project. The dolls feature distinct body parts including boots, legs with striped detailing, a striped body, arms with hands, a head, and a coordinating hat. This pattern includes making-up instructions to guide knitters through assembly and finishing of the completed pieces into fully formed dolls.
The Elfie Twins pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner crafters. The pattern utilizes two primary increase methods: the KFB (knit front and back) technique for general shaping, and a lift increase method for more precise shaping on the head and hands. The lift increase involves inserting the right needle into the stitch below, lifting that stitch onto the left needle to create an extra stitch, then knitting both the lifted stitch and the next stitch. These techniques allow the knitter to shape the three-dimensional doll components effectively.
While the pattern instructions provided focus on increase techniques, the Elfie Twins uses fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for toy construction. The pattern is worked in pieces using straight needles, with different needle sizes designated for different components. Smaller 2.5mm needles are used for the main elf body, while larger 3.5mm needles are used for accessories including the hat, shorts, and skirt. This variation in needle size allows the knitter to achieve appropriate fabric density and drape for each garment element.
The Elfie Twins pattern calls for Double Knit (DK) weight yarn in multiple colors to create visual interest and definition. For each elf, knitters need:
The pattern requires 2.5mm straight needles for the main elf body and 3.5mm straight needles for hat, shorts, and skirt components. Additional materials include 9mm toy safety eyes and toy safety stuffing to complete each doll, making this a fully equipped project for creating safe, finished dolls.
Designed as a beginner knitting project, the Elfie Twins pattern is accessible to knitters new to toy making. The straightforward construction using basic increases and simple stitch work makes this an ideal introduction to knitted doll creation.
