Product Description
The Eleanor Romper is a darling little one-piece outfit for babies. Worked with a seamless top-down raglan construction, the romper features a simple but elegant cable pattern running down the sleeves as well as the sides, all the way down to the ankles. The design is suitable for boys or girls so it can be a gender-neutral baby gift or made more masculine or feminine with color and button choice. This is the kind of garment that will be cherished by parents and passed down through generations.
Please Note: This pattern calls for the use of buttons. Be aware that buttons are a possible choking hazard, so please sew them very securely. Snaps can be used as an alternative but if doing so, I recommend sewing a fabric backing onto the button bands to make it a little sturdier.

What is Being Made
The Eleanor Romper is a knitted playsuit designed for babies and infants in sizes 3, 6, 12, and 18 months. This one-piece garment combines functionality with charming details, featuring button closures and colorwork elements suitable for everyday wear and special occasions.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to construct the romper. The garment is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, the foundational knit fabric that creates a smooth, classic appearance. Colorwork is incorporated into the design using the contrast color, requiring knitters to manage two yarns while maintaining consistent tension. The pattern utilizes circular needles for seamless construction, allowing for efficient knitting in the round where applicable. Cable needle work is included in the notions list, indicating textured cable stitches add visual interest to specific sections. Button bands are worked and finished with a crochet hook, providing a polished edge detail. The construction method emphasizes minimal seaming through strategic use of circular needles and seamless techniques.
Stitches and Stitch Details
Primary Stitch: Stockinette stitch (St st) forms the main fabric of the Eleanor Romper, creating a smooth, refined surface ideal for a baby garment.
Gauge: The pattern is worked to a gauge of 21 stitches and 29 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on blocked fabric. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit across all size ranges.
Additional Stitch Elements: Cable stitches are incorporated as textural details, requiring a cable needle for manipulation. Colorwork sections integrate the contrast color yarn, creating patterned areas throughout the design. Crochet finishing is applied to button bands and edges using a Size G (4 mm) crochet hook, providing structure and a professional appearance.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Yarn Weight and Yardage: This pattern calls for sport weight yarn. The main color (MC) requires 335 to 530 yards (305 to 480 meters) depending on size, while the contrast color (CC) requires 55 to 75 yards (50 to 70 meters). The original sample was created in a discontinued yarn; Kate Bostwick recommends substituting with Knit Picks Brava Sport, a 100% premium acrylic yarn available in 273-yard (250-meter) skeins per 100 grams (3.53 ounces).
Recommended Colors: The pattern suggests Dove Heather (color #25666) for the main color and Peapod (color #25677) for the contrast color, though any sport weight yarn in desired colors may be substituted.
Needles: The pattern requires US #6 (4 mm) circular needles in a 16-inch (40 cm) length, or the size needed to obtain correct gauge. US #6 (4 mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) or long circular needles are also needed. Optional smaller needles—US #4 (3.5 mm) DPNs and long circular needles—are available for working sections at a tighter gauge if desired.
Additional Notions: Stitch markers, 14 to 19 half-inch (13 mm) buttons depending on size, a cable needle for cable stitch work, a tapestry needle for finishing, and a Size G (4 mm) crochet hook for edge finishing round out the required materials.
Difficulty Level
The Eleanor Romper is classified as an intermediate knitting project. Knitters should be comfortable with circular needle techniques, managing gauge, reading pattern instructions, and executing colorwork and cable stitches. The seamless construction and multiple techniques make this an engaging project for knitters with foundational skills seeking to expand their abilities.
