Edie's Blanket by Auroraknit
What is Being Made
Edie's Blanket is a knitted throw blanket available in nine different sizes, ranging from a small 41x55cm lap blanket to a large 144x151cm bed-sized throw. This versatile project is designed by Auroraknit and suits crafters of all experience levels, making it an excellent choice for both beginners exploring blanket construction and experienced knitters seeking a straightforward, satisfying project.
Craft and Technique
This is a knitting project worked flat on straight needles. The blanket features a structured construction with distinct sections: a bottom edging, a main blanket pattern area, and a top edging. The design uses a repeating stitch pattern that creates visual interest while remaining accessible to beginner-level knitters. The pattern includes both written instructions and chart form options, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method of following the pattern.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The blanket employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for its beginner difficulty rating. Key stitch abbreviations used include:
- s1wyib – slip one stitch with yarn in back, a selvedge stitch that creates neat edges
- K – knit stitch, the primary stitch throughout the pattern
The pattern is constructed in three main sections. The bottom edging consists of 10 to 16 rows (depending on size) of slipped-stitch selvage work. The main blanket pattern involves repeating a bracketed sequence 5 to 16 times depending on the chosen size. The top edging mirrors the bottom edging structure with 10 to 16 rows of similar edge treatment. Stitch markers are optional tools that may be used to help track pattern repeats, and a yarn needle is essential for weaving in ends after completion.
Materials and Gauge
Edie's Blanket is worked in DK weight yarn, requiring between 285 and 2460 meters depending on the finished size selected. Auroraknit recommends yarns with good stitch definition, with merino, cotton, and bamboo blends being particularly suitable choices. These fiber blends offer breathability and drape appropriate for a blanket project.
The pattern calls for 3.75mm needles and specifies a tension of 20 stitches and 30 rows to 10 centimeters. Achieving correct gauge is important for obtaining the intended finished dimensions across all nine size options.
Finishing
Once the pattern repeats are complete and all stitches have been worked, the blanket is finished by casting off loosely to maintain elasticity at the edges. The final steps include blocking to even out the fabric and weave in all yarn ends for a polished, professional appearance.
