Edel and Pure Shawl by Aniknits
What is Being Made
The Edel and Pure is an asymmetric triangle shawl designed by Aniknits. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 190 x 70 cm (approximately 75 x 27.5 inches). The asymmetric triangular shape makes it a versatile accessory suitable for draping around shoulders or wearing as a wrap.
Design and Inspiration
The shawl features a decorative lace border showcasing several horseshoe motifs, which traditionally symbolize luck in various cultures. The asymmetric triangle construction is achieved through strategic increases worked in every other row on one side, creating an elegant, flowing silhouette that gradually expands as you progress through the pattern.
Construction Techniques
The Edel and Pure employs a thoughtful two-part construction method. Knitters begin by working the lace border section, which frames the entire shawl. Once the decorative border is complete, the body of the shawl is worked in stockinette stitch with randomly placed purl stitches, adding subtle texture and visual interest to the main fabric while maintaining the shawl's elegant drape.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch – forms the primary fabric of the shawl body, creating a smooth, classic knit surface
- Lace stitches – create the decorative horseshoe-patterned border
- Purl stitches – randomly distributed throughout the stockinette body for textural variation
- I-Cord – used as finishing equipment, likely for edging or bind-off details
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for approximately 1.3 skeins of Pure yarn from Rohrspatz und Wollmeise, totaling around 800 meters (approximately 575 yards) of fingering weight yarn. The sample was knitted in the colorway Edel using 100% wool. The yarn weight recommendations include 4-ply, DK, lace, and sport weight options, allowing knitters flexibility to adapt the pattern to their preferred yarn while maintaining proper stitch definition.
Needles and Equipment
This pattern requires 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needles with a minimum length of 80 cm to accommodate the growing stitches as the asymmetric triangle expands. Knitters should verify their needle size produces the required gauge for their chosen yarn. Additional equipment needed includes an I-Cord tool for finishing touches.
Skill Level and Customization
The Edel and Pure is rated as an intermediate-level knitting project, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with lace patterns and manage shaping increases. The pattern includes helpful appendix instructions for adapting the design to thinner or thicker yarns, making it accessible to knitters who prefer alternative yarn weights while maintaining the shawl's intended proportions and drape.
