What is Being Made

This project creates a functional teapot cosy designed to fit a standard 5 1/2" high teapot with a 20" circumference. The cosy is knitted from upcycled materials, making it an environmentally conscious alternative to traditional yarn-based projects. The finished garment produces a very stretchy, thick fabric that hugs the teapot securely while providing natural shaping at the spout and handle openings.

Materials Required

The primary material is one medium ladies' t-shirt, which is transformed into yarn through a recycling process. Additional supplies include US size 10 knitting needles, scissors, and a tapestry needle for finishing. The super chunky yarn weight created from the t-shirt material produces the desired thickness and stretchiness for the finished cosy.

Yarn Preparation Technique

Rather than using conventional yarn, this project employs an innovative upcycling method inspired by instructions published in Knit.1 magazine, Summer 2007 issue. The t-shirt is first laid flat, and the seamed bottom edge is removed and discarded. The armholes are then cut away, leaving a tube of fabric. This tube is cut in a continuous 1/2" spiral pattern to create one long continuous length of yarn, which is then wound into a ball. Larger t-shirts yield more yarn. For faster cutting, the instructions suggest using a serger with the thread removed and a marker set at 1/2" intervals.

Knitting Technique and Stitches

The project is worked using stockinette stitch, which is the primary stitch throughout the cosy. An important design feature of this pattern leverages the natural tendency of stockinette stitch to curl at the edges, which actually provides the necessary shaping at the spout and handle areas. This eliminates the need for complex shaping techniques while creating a functional, well-fitted cosy.

Skill Level and Construction

This is a beginner-level knitting project, making it accessible to those new to the craft. The pattern begins with casting on 18 stitches and continues with straightforward stockinette stitch work. The simplicity of the stitch pattern combined with the forgiving nature of the thick, stretchy t-shirt yarn makes this an ideal introduction to knitting for beginners.
