EC3 Shawl by Georgia Farrell

What is Being Made

The EC3 Shawl is a knitted wrap designed by Georgia Farrell and published by Rowan. This is an intermediate-level shawl project available in both a one-colour version and a three-colour version, offering flexibility for knitters who prefer solid or multi-hued colourways.

Craft and Techniques

This project is executed entirely in knitting, utilizing fundamental shawl construction methods. The design incorporates strategic increases and stitch manipulation to create the characteristic expanding shape of a triangular or crescent shawl. The pattern demonstrates intermediate skill through its use of directional increases and purl-knit contrast stitching to create textured pattern sections.

Stitches Used

The EC3 Shawl employs several key knitting stitches to achieve its finished design:

  • Knit stitch (K) – forms the foundation of the fabric
  • Purl stitch (P) – creates textured contrast and visual interest within the pattern
  • M1R (Make One Right) – a right-leaning increase used to expand the shawl symmetrically
  • M1Rp (Make One Right Purl) – a purl-based increase variation that maintains pattern consistency

These stitches work together to build an intricate stitch pattern with deliberate increases that shape the shawl as rows progress.

Materials

Yarn: Rowan Alpaca Soft DK is the specified yarn for this project. The DK (double knit) weight provides a lightweight yet warm finished garment suitable for a shawl. For the one-colour version, 6 x 50gm balls are required (photographed in Rainy Day 210). The three-colour version uses a total of 8 x 50gm balls distributed across three coordinating shades: Baby Blue 224 (2 balls), Autumn Gold 220 (2 balls), and Blossom 223 (4 balls).

Needles: One pair of 4mm needles (US size 6) are required to work this project.

Tension and Finished Specifications

The pattern is designed to be worked at a tension of 21 stitches and 32 rows over 10 centimetres, measured over pattern using 4mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions and drape of the completed shawl.
