Easy T Shirt by Frugal Knitting Haus
What Is Being Made
The Easy T Shirt is a beginner-friendly knitted top designed by Frugal Knitting Haus. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a classic short-sleeved t-shirt available in four finished chest sizes: 40, 44½, 49½, and 52 inches. The garment is constructed using straightforward knitting techniques and colorwork, making it an ideal project for those new to garment construction.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners:
- Ribbing – A 2-inch K1, P1 (knit one, purl one) ribbed cuff is worked at the lower edge using smaller needles to create elasticity and a finished appearance
- Stockinette Stitch – The primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic knit surface
- Striping – Two-color horizontal stripes are incorporated throughout the body, alternating between the main color and Color A in repeating 6-row sequences, then transitioning to a 1-row and 3-row stripe pattern for visual interest
- Shaping – Bind-off decreases are used at the armholes and neckline to create the garment's silhouette
- Neck Shaping – A center front neck opening is created by binding off stitches and working both sides simultaneously with separate yarn strands
Stitches Used
The Easy T Shirt relies on basic stitches that form the foundation of knitting:
- Knit Stitch (K) – The fundamental stitch used throughout the stockinette body and ribbed edges
- Purl Stitch (P) – Combined with knit stitches in the K1, P1 ribbing pattern and in stockinette construction
- Stockinette Stitch – Alternating rows of knit and purl stitches create the smooth fabric texture
Materials and Tools
The Easy T Shirt pattern specifies the following materials:
- Yarn – Cotton yarn in worsted weight, with yardage requirements varying by size: 8 balls (2 oz. each) of main color for the smallest size through 10 balls for the largest size, plus 5 to 7 balls (2 oz. each) of Color A for striping
- Needles – Two pairs of US knitting needles: US #4 needles for the ribbed cuff and US #7 needles for the main stockinette body. The smaller needle size creates tighter ribbing; the larger needle produces the correct fabric gauge
- Gauge – 5 stitches and 7 rows per 1 inch, measured over stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for accurate finished dimensions
Pattern Overview
The garment is constructed in two main pieces: a back and a front, both worked from the lower edge upward. Each piece begins with a ribbed cuff, transitions to stockinette stitch with the two-color stripe pattern, and includes armhole and neckline shaping. The front piece is worked 3 inches shorter than the back before neck shaping begins, and both sides of the front neck are worked simultaneously to ensure symmetry. This straightforward construction method makes the Easy T Shirt an accessible project for knitters building their garment-making skills.
