Product Description
This is a pattern for a very “long wingspan” crescent shaped shawl. The upper section is a fun and easy lace stitch. The bottom is enhanced by a lovely lace edging that adds a wonderfully feminine finish to this piece. The shawlette measures 68 inches at the widest points across the top and is 24 inches deep at the deepest point. It is made with with Lorna’s Laces Sportmate yarn in two colors. Of course, you can make it more muted colors, or even a single color, is that suits you best. The edging was added in the traditional Shetland manner and is not difficult to do.
I think you’ll have fun both making and wearing this shawl, in one or more of the several ways that it can be worn.
Skill Level: Beginner + - Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of lace knitting).
Any heavy weight fingering yarn or sport weight yarn will work for this pattern.
Easy Mikado Crescent Shawl by Linda Lehman
Project Overview
The Easy Mikado Crescent Shawl is a colorful, crescent-shaped knitted wrap designed by Linda Lehman. This project is an ideal choice for knitters with beginner to intermediate experience who want to create a large, eye-catching accessory. The shawl's vibrant design is intended to brighten both the knitting experience and everyday wear, making it a statement piece that's guaranteed to be noticed.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a large crescent-shaped shawl or wrap. The finished piece is substantial enough to serve as a versatile layering garment, suitable for various occasions and seasons. The crescent silhouette is a classic shawl shape that drapes elegantly when worn.
Skill Level and Techniques
The pattern is rated as Beginner+ to Intermediate, assuming knitters have a solid working knowledge of fundamental knitting techniques including knitting, purling, and yarn overs (yo's). The design incorporates lace elements, which adds visual interest and requires some experience with lace knitting. Additionally, the pattern uses a provisional cast on technique, which allows for a seamless or flexible edge finish and is an essential skill for advanced beginner knitters to master.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used in the shawl, creating a smooth, classic fabric base
- Yarn Overs (yo's): Used to create lace elements and decorative increases throughout the pattern
- Lace Knitting: Incorporated into the design to add texture and visual depth to the crescent shawl
- Provisional Cast On: Used at the beginning to create a flexible edge that can be picked up later for finishing
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern requires 1050 to 1150 yards of sport weight yarn, or alternatively, heavy fingering weight yarn can be substituted. This yardage range allows for the creation of a generously sized wrap.
Needles: Size #6 U.S. needles (4.00 mm) with a cable length of at least 32 inches are required to accommodate the width of the shawl as it grows during knitting.
Additional Supplies: Two stitch markers are needed to track pattern repeats and shaping, and a darning needle is essential for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 4½ stitches to the inch and 6½ rows to the inch when measured in stockinette stitch and wet blocked. While the pattern notes that gauge is not critically important to the overall success of the project, variations in personal gauge will affect the final dimensions of the shawl and may impact yarn requirements. Knitters who achieve a different gauge should adjust needle size accordingly to match the specified gauge if precise sizing is desired.
