Easy Knit Shell Stitch Look Baby Blanket

What Is Being Made

This is a beginner-friendly knitted baby blanket designed by Frugal Knitting Haus. The finished blanket measures 30 inches by 38 inches, making it an ideal size for a crib or stroller. The project uses a decorative shell stitch pattern combined with seed stitch edging to create a textured, visually interesting fabric suitable for a nursery.

Techniques Used

The blanket employs several fundamental knitting techniques that make it accessible to beginners. Wet blocking is used to finish the blanket and achieve the stated final dimensions. The pattern incorporates knitting with multiple strands held together, which creates a thicker, more substantial fabric using thinner yarn. This technique allows crafters to work with baby weight yarn while producing a blanket with good drape and warmth.

The construction begins with a cast-on of 96 stitches and includes strategic use of decreasing through knit three together stitches, which is balanced by yarn-over increases to maintain stitch count and create the characteristic shell stitch appearance.

Stitches Used

  • Seed Stitch: Created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard pattern. The blanket uses seed stitch for the first and last 4 stitches of each row to create a finished border, and for the initial 4 rows to establish a stable foundation.
  • Shell Stitch Pattern: The main decorative element, created by combining knit three together decreases with yarn-over increases (knit 1, purl 1, knit 1 in a single stitch). This creates the characteristic scalloped or shell-like texture.
  • Knit Stitch and Purl Stitch: The fundamental stitches that form the basis of all variations used in this pattern.

Materials

The blanket is worked using baby weight yarn, with approximately 4 balls of 113 grams each required to complete the project. The yarn is held as 2 strands together throughout the entire blanket, which doubles the effective yarn weight and creates a more substantial fabric than working with single strands.

A 29-inch circular needle in size 11 is used for the project. Circular needles are practical for blankets as they accommodate the large number of stitches without strain.

The gauge before wet blocking is 5 stitches over 2 inches, which is a relatively loose gauge appropriate for creating a soft, draping fabric suitable for a baby blanket.
