Easy Fringed Cowl by Judith Stalus

What Is Being Made

The Easy Fringed Cowl is a versatile, warm neck accessory created using crochet techniques. This cowl is customizable in size, allowing makers to adjust the width and length to suit personal preference. You can create a small neck warmer or extend it into a longer cowl style, making it adaptable for different wearing styles and climate needs.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is designed as a crochet pattern, making it ideal for crocheters of all skill levels. The pattern is classified as beginner-friendly, meaning it uses fundamental crochet techniques that newer crafters can successfully complete. The straightforward construction method allows makers to focus on building foundational crochet skills while producing a wearable, finished garment.

Stitches and Techniques Used

The Easy Fringed Cowl employs essential crochet stitches that form the foundation of the design:

  • Chain (Ch) – Used to create the foundation and base structure of the cowl
  • Double Crochet (Dc) – The primary stitch that builds the body of the cowl, creating texture and drape
  • Double Crochet Three Together (Dc3tog) – A decrease stitch that shapes and structures the cowl, created by working yarn over, inserting the hook into consecutive stitches, drawing up loops, and pulling through multiple loops on the hook
  • Fringe – A finishing technique that adds decorative texture and movement to the edges of the cowl

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern accommodates multiple yarn options, all within the worsted weight and super chunky weight categories, allowing crafters to choose based on availability and preference.

Beige Cowl Option: Requires 1 skein of Loops and Threads Impeccable (4.5 oz.), or approximately 240 yards of any worsted weight yarn. Note that Loops and Threads skeins are larger than most standard skeins, so yardage should be verified when substituting other worsted weight yarns. A Size J crochet hook and tapestry needle are required for finishing.

Multi Cowl Option: Uses 1 skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick Stripes (5 oz.). For additional fringe or a deeper cowl, a second skein may be purchased, as one skein provides just enough yarn for the basic pattern. This version requires a Size K crochet hook and tapestry needle.

Gray Cowl Option: Calls for 1 skein of Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable (3.5 oz.). This variation uses a Size J crochet hook and tapestry needle for completion.

All versions use a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and attaching fringe, a standard finishing tool in crochet projects.
