Product Description
Easter basket ducks
Wouldn’t this be a wonderful Easter basket to make for a child. This basket with ducks on little waves is ideal for collecting Easter eggs. You have to make this basket with the same technique used for Mochila bags: yarn under technique and using 2 or three colors at the same time. I have made it in blue, brown, off white and yellow with blue waves on the bottom.
The basket will be 10 cm/3.9 inch high and the diameter is approx. 11 cm/ 4.3 inch. The strap is 1 cm/0.4 inch wide and 18 cm/ 7 inch long.
Easter Basket Ducks by Carolina Speek
Project Overview
The Easter Basket Ducks is an intermediate-level crochet container pattern designed by Carolina Speek. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a decorative basket with coordinating duck embellishments, perfect for holding Easter treats or small items. The finished basket measures approximately 10 cm (3.9 inches) in height with a diameter of roughly 11 cm (4.3 inches), and includes an attached strap measuring 1 cm (0.4 inches) wide by 18 cm (7 inches) long.
Materials Required
This pattern is designed for sport weight and 4-ply yarn worked with a size C2 (2.5 mm) crochet hook. The specific yarn quantities needed are:
- Off-white yarn: 45 grams (113 meters / 124 yards)
- Blue yarn: 30 grams (75 meters / 82 yards)
- Brown yarn: 25 grams (63 meters / 69 yards)
- Yellow yarn: 25 grams (63 meters / 69 yards)
The pattern notes that suitable yarn options include Scheepjeswol Larra or SMC Catania, both appropriate choices for this weight category.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Easter Basket Ducks pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The stitches used throughout the pattern include:
- Chain (CH): The foundation stitch used to begin the project
- Single Crochet (SC): The primary stitch worked using the back loop only and executed with yarn under technique
- Double Crochet (DC): Used for creating texture and structure variation
- Slip Stitch (SLST): Applied for joining rounds and securing stitches
- Magic Ring: An advanced foundation technique used to begin circular sections
- Increases (INC): Created by working 2 single crochets into 1 single crochet stitch to expand the fabric
Pattern Construction and Color Work
The pattern uses a color-coded system to guide crafters through the construction process. Instructions reference yarn colors using abbreviations: B for blue, W for off-white, Br for brown, and Y for yellow. Stitch counts are paired with color designations (for example, "4B" indicates four single crochets worked in blue yarn, while "1W" means one single crochet in off-white). This systematic approach makes it easy to follow the pattern's progression and ensure proper color placement throughout the basket and duck designs.
The single crochet stitches are consistently worked using the yarn under technique and worked into the back loop only, creating a distinctive texture and professional finish characteristic of this construction method.
Finished Project Characteristics
Upon completion, the Easter Basket Ducks project yields a functional decorative container suitable for seasonal displays or gift-giving. The multi-colored construction using off-white, blue, brown, and yellow creates a festive Easter aesthetic, while the attached strap provides both visual appeal and practical functionality for carrying or displaying the finished basket.
