Product Description
Earthstar is a fun striped semicircular shawl overlaid with a cable motif radiating from a central point in a star shape. The star is made of a series of wedges which gradually shift into a slip stitch (mosaic) zigzag pattern, then into a lace mesh that can be worked in stripes for a unique 2 colour effect.
The cables are integrated into the knitting, rather than being stitched on afterwards. The shawl is worked in stripes, and the cable lines are made by knitting cables in the working colour as you normally would, then on rows of the other colour those stitches that form the cable line are slipped without being knit. So it’s easier than it looks.
The size of the shawl is adaptable, both the texture stitch and the lace sections can be worked to any size.
Suits fingering to DK weight yarn in any yardage between approx 700-1000m (990-1100y) or skip charts 2&3 for a smaller shawl.
The design can be worked entirely from the written pattern, or from charts with some notes.
Earthstar Shawl by Nim Teasdale
What is Being Made
Earthstar is an advanced knitted shawl pattern designed by independent designer Nim Teasdale. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a sophisticated shawl featuring intricate colorwork and cable techniques, suitable for experienced knitters seeking a challenging and visually striking project.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is executed entirely through knitting, utilizing advanced techniques that require careful attention to stitch placement and color management. The shawl incorporates both traditional stockinette stitch construction and decorative cable work, making it an ideal project for knitters who have mastered fundamental techniques and are ready to tackle more complex pattern instructions.
Stitches and Cable Work
The Earthstar pattern employs several key stitching techniques:
- Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side
- Cable stitches (including C2R cable crosses) create textured, twisted vertical lines throughout the design
- Slipped stitches are used strategically to manage color changes and create clean transitions between the main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC)
- Yarn over increases (kyok notation) add shaping and openwork elements to the shawl structure
- Purl stitches on the wrong side are essential for properly forming cables in the active color, while inactive color cables are slipped without being worked
Color and Design Elements
The pattern features two-color knitting with a main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC), allowing knitters to create striking visual effects through strategic color placement. The cable work is executed in stockinette stitch, requiring careful identification of cable stitches on the wrong side by locating matching purl bumps at the stitch base. An optional swatch is provided for knitters to practice techniques and test color combinations before committing to the full project.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Earthstar is worked with 4-ply yarn weight, which provides the fine gauge necessary for the detailed cable and colorwork elements. Knitters will need appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn and sufficient yardage in both main color and contrasting color to complete the shawl. The downloadable PDF format includes row-by-row instructions with detailed guidance on managing stitches across multiple rows and identifying cable placements during the knitting process.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated advanced, reflecting the complexity of managing cables, two-color knitting, and precise stitch identification throughout the project. Knitters should be comfortable reading detailed pattern instructions, managing multiple stitch types simultaneously, and troubleshooting cable placement on both right and wrong sides of the fabric.
