Product Description

You could use any yarn weight for these bunnies as long as you choose a fitting hook, it will only influence the finished size. My example rabbits were made with DK yarn and 3mm hook, they are about 8" long and 6" tall to the tip of the ears. The pattern is 21 pages long with many photographs illustrating the process. It is written in English with US crochet terms. Stitches and techniques used: starting with magic ring, chain, slip stitch, single crochet, single crochet increase, invisible decrease, work in front loop only Multiple color changes are necessary to make the typical Dutch markings, which (coupled with realistic shaping) make this an advanced level amigurumi. Finished items made from this pattern are yours to keep or gift away or sell, I only ask you to give me credit as designer in case you decide to sell them.

Dutch Rabbit Amigurumi Crochet Toy

What is Being Made

This is a crochet pattern for a Dutch rabbit toy, designed by Katalin Gálusz. The finished amigurumi measures approximately 20 cm (8 inches) long and 15 cm (6 inches) tall to the tip of the ears when made with DK yarn. Dutch rabbits are easily recognizable by their distinctive color pattern and were once the most popular pet breed, though dwarf rabbits have since surpassed them in popularity. This toy captures the charm of this classic breed and remains a beloved design choice for crochet enthusiasts.

Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level crochet project uses standard amigurumi construction techniques to create a three-dimensional stuffed toy. The pattern requires working in the round to build the body, head, and limbs of the rabbit. A key technique consideration is achieving a tight gauge during crocheting, which is essential for creating a sturdy, well-defined toy that holds its shape properly. The designer notes that yarn thickness varies considerably even within the same weight category, and individual crocheters' tension will differ, so adjustments may be needed based on personal gauge.

Stitches and Details

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided content, standard amigurumi stitches are employed throughout this pattern. The eyes require special attention, with the designer recommending that hook size be adjusted based on the yarn weight used to achieve appropriately sized eyes. For the tail, the pattern suggests using yarn made from natural animal fibers such as wool or mohair, or quality acrylic yarns—materials that typically fluff up nicely to create a realistic, fuzzy appearance characteristic of rabbit tails.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The pattern is originally designed for DK weight yarn, though the designer notes that any yarn weight can be substituted as long as the crochet hook size is adjusted accordingly to maintain proper proportions and eye sizing.

Approximate yarn quantities for DK weight construction:

  • Brown/Black (or bunny-appropriate color): 105 meters / 115 yards (sample yarn: Schachenmayr Bravo 8281 Brown)
  • White: 43 meters / 47 yards (sample yarn: Schachenmayr Bravo 8224 White)

The designer emphasizes that these yarn amounts serve as rough guidelines only, as yarn thickness varies significantly even within the same weight category, and individual crocheters' work differs. A suitable crochet hook must be selected based on the chosen yarn weight to achieve the tight gauge necessary for this toy's construction. This downloadable PDF pattern is formatted for independent use and is suitable for intermediate-level crocheters.

Hare-realustic and Fun

Pattern was good although I did not cut the yarn after each color change but waited until nearly finished as this ensured having 0lenty of yarn in case I had needed to frog/redo. Mt niece loves how it turned out!

No problems, quick service, easy

The Dutch rabbit pattern looks exquisite. Looking forward to making a rabbit for a grandson, who raises rabbits, and shows them at 4H.

Thanks for making it simple.

Pattern was easy to read. Just be careful, once you attach the legs, to count all stitches on next round. Don't start thinking to skip stitches that look like part of attachment stitch. Once you get that...it is simple. Don't get distracted. You may miss a few rounds. Lol. I missed 3 single stitch rounds. Even with that boo boo, all that happened was a smaller bunny. These babies look real. Thanks for a cute cute pattern.
