Product Description
These socks use the gorgeous colors of Trekking XXL and entrelac to invoke the clan tartans of the Highlanders. Pick a subtle colorway for a tonal effect, or a brighter option to make the entrelac pop. Drummossie is knitted in pieces; first the toe is worked, then the instep is knitted straight and extra stitches are provisionally cast on at the ankle for the leg and cuff. After finishing the leg, you go back to the heel and pick up from the provisional cast-on for the heel flap. After turning the heel and picking up gusset stitches, the sole is knit flat and attached to the instep at either side. Once the sole is the correct length, the sole stitches are grafted to the remaining toe stitches.
Skills needed: entrelac knitting, provisional casting on, picking up stitches and making new stitches. Gauge: 36 sts/48 rows over 4 in/10 cm in stockinette.
Drummossie Socks by Rachel Brown
What is Being Made
Drummossie is a pair of knitted socks inspired by Scottish Highland history and the Jacobite clans. The design draws aesthetic inspiration from the haunting landscape of Drummossie Moor (also known as Culloden), a historically significant site in the Scottish Highlands. The socks incorporate the rich, layered colors associated with traditional clan tartans through strategic use of color and stitch pattern.
Design Inspiration and Colorway Options
These socks are designed to showcase the gorgeous color palette of Trekking XXL yarn. Knitters can choose a subtle, tonal colorway to create a sophisticated, blended effect, or select a brighter yarn option to make the entrelac stitch pattern stand out prominently. The color choices directly influence the visual impact of the finished socks.
Knitting Techniques Used
Drummossie employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that create visual interest and structural integrity:
- Entrelac stitch pattern: This textured, interlocking stitch technique is the primary decorative element, creating a woven appearance that evokes tartans and clan patterns
- Provisional cast-on: Used at the ankle to allow for later pickup of stitches, enabling the modular construction method
- Toe-up construction: The sock begins at the toe and progresses toward the leg, allowing for customizable fit and yarn usage
- Heel flap and turning: Traditional heel construction techniques are employed after the leg is completed
- Gusset shaping: Stitches are picked up along the sides of the heel flap and decreased to shape the foot properly
- Flat knitting: The sole is knitted flat rather than in the round, offering an alternative construction method
Construction Method
Drummossie uses a distinctive modular construction approach. The sock is knitted in separate pieces rather than in one continuous round. The process begins with the toe, which is worked first. The instep is then knitted straight. At the ankle, extra stitches are provisionally cast on to accommodate both the leg and cuff. Once the leg is complete, knitters return to work the heel by picking up from the provisional cast-on. After turning the heel and picking up gusset stitches, the sole is completed by knitting flat.
Yarn and Materials
Drummossie is designed to be worked in Trekking XXL yarn, a multi-colored sock yarn known for its rich, varied colorways. The pattern accommodates both 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, offering flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the intended sock structure and drape. The choice of yarn weight may influence the final fabric density and warmth of the finished socks.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it does not require advanced techniques, the combination of entrelac stitch work, provisional cast-ons, modular construction, and heel shaping techniques requires solid foundational knitting skills and comfort with working from written instructions.
Format
Drummossie is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing knitters to access the full instructions immediately upon purchase and print or view them digitally while working.
