King Cole Chunky Pattern 4382 – Dress, Cardigan, Hat and Scarf in Chunky Knitting

Pattern 4382 from King Cole is a comprehensive chunky-weight knitting pattern that includes four coordinating designs: a dress, a cardigan, a hat, and a scarf. Sized to fit chest measurements of 61–81 cm (24–32 in), this collection is worked in King Cole Chunky yarn and is rated as an intermediate difficulty level, making it well suited to knitters who are comfortable with shaping techniques and reading multi-size patterns. The raglan sleeve construction featured in both the dress and cardigan gives these garments a classic, relaxed silhouette that is both practical and stylish.

As with all King Cole patterns, a donation is made to the Pink Ribbon Foundation with every purchase, adding a charitable dimension to your crafting project.

About the Designs

Dress

The dress is a knitted garment designed with a raglan sleeve construction, meaning the sleeves and body are shaped together from the underarm to the neckline without a traditional set-in shoulder seam. This technique creates a smooth, diagonal seam line running from the underarm to the collar and is particularly well suited to chunky-weight yarns, as it reduces bulk at the shoulder. The dress is worked in King Cole Chunky yarn on 8mm needles, producing a warm and substantial fabric ideal for cooler seasons.

Cardigan

The cardigan shares the same raglan sleeve shaping as the dress, ensuring a cohesive look across the collection. Cardigans worked in chunky yarn knit up quickly and provide excellent warmth, making this an appealing project for intermediate knitters looking for a satisfying, relatively fast make. The raglan construction requires careful attention to simultaneous increases or decreases across multiple pieces, which is what places this pattern in the intermediate category.

Hat

The hat is a straightforward accessory design worked in King Cole Chunky yarn. Chunky-weight hats are among the most satisfying knitting projects due to their speed and the cosy, substantial fabric they produce. The hat coordinates with the other pieces in the set, making it ideal for gifting as part of a complete outfit or wardrobe collection.

Scarf

The scarf completes the four-piece collection and is worked in King Cole Chunky yarn. Like the hat, it is a relatively accessible component of the pattern set and provides an excellent opportunity to practise consistent tension across a longer piece of fabric. Together, the hat and scarf make ideal standalone projects for knitters who wish to work only the accessories from this pattern.

Stitches and Techniques Used

This pattern draws on a selection of classic knitting stitches and construction methods:

  • Garter stitch (gst) – every row is knitted, producing a ridged, reversible fabric with good elasticity. The stated tension of 12 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm (4 in) is measured over garter stitch on 8mm needles.
  • Stocking stitch (st-st) – the right side is knitted and the wrong side is purled, creating the smooth, classic fabric most associated with knitwear.
  • Reversed stocking stitch (rev st-st) – the purl side is used as the right side, giving a textured, bumpy surface that can be used as a design detail or contrast element.
  • Raglan sleeve shaping – a construction technique involving paired increases or decreases worked at regular intervals to shape the sleeve cap and body armhole simultaneously, joining them at the yoke.
  • Increasing and decreasing – standard shaping techniques including inc (increase) and dec (decrease) are used throughout to shape the garments.
  • Pass slipped stitch over (psso) – a decrease method used to create neat, directional shaping, often paired with a slip stitch for a tidy finish.
  • Knit (K) and Purl (P) – the two fundamental knitting stitches that form the basis of all the fabrics in this pattern.
