Product Description

I created this pouch because I needed something to hold a set dice, as they came in a set of five. So, I got to work and created this pouch that now holds my favorite set of dice. The pouch is created by crocheting two rectangles and then crocheting around the two together to create the pouch. It is a simple and easy project, that has a great use!

Drawstring Dice Pouch by Megan Gebhard

Project Overview

This downloadable crochet pattern creates a small, functional drawstring dice pouch perfect for storing and organizing dice. Designed by Megan Gebhard, the finished pouch measures 3.75 x 5.5 inches, making it an ideal size for tabletop gaming accessories. The pattern uses basic crochet techniques to construct a two-sided pouch with a drawstring closure and decorative wave detailing.

What You'll Make

A compact drawstring pouch featuring a structured rectangular body with a distinctive wave pattern created along the top opening. The pouch is constructed by crocheting two identical pieces and joining them together while leaving the top open for the drawstring mechanism. The wave effect is achieved through strategic stitch placement during the assembly process, adding visual interest to this practical storage solution.

Crochet Techniques Used

  • Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create the foundation of each pouch piece
  • Single crochet (sc) – The primary stitch used throughout the pattern for a tight, dense fabric
  • Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) – Used for decreasing stitches as needed
  • Slip stitch (sl st.) – Used to join rounds and connect pieces seamlessly
  • Tight tension crocheting – Essential technique to minimize gaps between stitches and create a secure pouch that prevents small items from falling through

Stitches and Construction Details

The pattern begins with a chain foundation of 13 stitches and requires making two identical pieces. Rather than cutting yarn between pieces, you work continuously to connect both sides together. When joining the two pieces, the pattern calls for placing 3 single crochet stitches in the bottom two corners to create reinforced, rounded corners. At row 18, the pattern incorporates intentional spaces that serve as the drawstring channel. The top portion remains open during initial construction, with work proceeding into one side at a time after the two pieces are connected. This staggered approach creates the characteristic wave look along the opening.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The pattern recommends I Love this Cotton yarn in the Deep Turquoise colorway, requiring approximately 39 yards total. Any weight 3 or 4 yarn (aran weight) is suitable as a substitute.

Tools: A 4 mm or G/6 crochet hook is specified for the project. The pattern notes that using one size smaller hook than typical for your yarn weight will create tighter stitches with minimal spacing. Additional supplies include scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 8 stitches and 8 rows per 2 inches. The finished pouch measures 3.75 inches wide by 5.5 inches tall, creating a compact size ideal for dice storage and transport.

Key Pattern Notes

Tight crochet tension is emphasized as critical to the success of this project – working tightly or using a smaller hook size prevents gaps between stitches that could allow dice to slip through. The pattern requires careful attention to the assembly process, as the two pieces are joined without cutting yarn between them, and the drawstring channel is created through strategic spacing at row 18. The wave detailing along the top opening adds both aesthetic appeal and functional structure to the finished pouch.
