Named for the pain, frustration, and necessary fortitude that we’ve all had to endure and discover as we each forge our own path through the unbelievable events of 2020. This shawl provides some garter-stitch comfort knitting by letting you work from stash and by letting you control the size and final shape.
Dragon Force is worked modularly, from the center-outwards, section by section and is finished with an encompassing border. Pictured is a 6-section version symbolizing dragon wings in mid-flight (we’re not through this yet), but feel free to make it with more or less sections as you see fit.
Instructions are given for both a traditional pattern and a percentage option so that you can use any yarns that you like.

This approach offers significant flexibility in the finished dimensions—crafters can control how large their shawl becomes by adjusting how many sections they complete. The pattern incorporates garter-stitch sections, which provide meditative, comfortable knitting that works well for stash-busting projects. The modular design also means that knitters can easily adjust the final shape of their shawl based on personal preference and yarn availability.
Stitches Used
The pattern features garter stitch as a primary stitch element, creating a textured, reversible fabric with excellent drape suitable for shawl construction. The garter-stitch sections provide visual interest while maintaining a straightforward knitting rhythm ideal for intermediate-level crafters.
Yarn and Materials
The Dragon Force Shawl requires approximately 400 yards (365 meters) each of 3 different colors in fingering weight yarn, totaling roughly 1,200 yards for the complete project. The sample shown was knitted using The Girl Who Crafted Northern Lights Sock yarn in a 75% Merino / 20% Nylon / 5% Stellina blend, which provides durability, elasticity, and subtle sparkle. The three colorways used in the sample are:
- CC1 - Lady Edith: A rich red colorway
- CC2 - Pink Lemonade: A warm yellow colorway
- CC3 - Wolves of Winter: A cool grey colorway
Knitting needles required are US 3 (3.25 mm) circular or straight needles, or a size appropriate to achieve the desired gauge. The fingering weight yarn combined with smaller needles creates a refined, delicate fabric with excellent stitch definition.
Yarn Weight Flexibility
While the pattern sample uses fingering weight yarn, the modular design of the Dragon Force Shawl makes it adaptable to various yarn weights. Crafters can experiment with different weights from their stash—from cobweb and lace weights for an ethereal drape to heavier worsted or aran weights for a more substantial garment—adjusting needle size and yardage accordingly to achieve their preferred finished shawl dimensions and texture.
