Product Description
If you love combining colours, but don’t like handling more than one yarn at a time, then this is the perfect pattern for you! Work two rounds per colour, and let the stitch pattern do the work for you: It will make the colours pool into dots creating the impression of a much more complicated pattern. It also results in a marvellous thick and cushiony fabric. And if that was not enough, it is also very elastic, and moulds itself around the hand in a snug, but comfortable fit. O, and did I mention that it creates a beautiful, bumpy texture?
The double lace edging provides an additional way of mixing colours, adding extra interest, and making the mitts look so much more elegant!
The sizes are Women's XS, S, M, L, XL for hand circumference above thumb of 17, 18, 19, 20.5, 21.5cm / 6¾, 7⅛, 7½, 8, 8½. If you are between sizes, or like a very snug fit, choose the smaller size - the stitch pattern stretches really well!
Double Take Mitts by Dagmar Mora
What is Being Made
Double Take Mitts are a pair of knitted gloves designed for color work enthusiasts who prefer working with a single yarn at a time. These mitts feature a clever stitch pattern that creates the visual impression of a complex multi-color design while requiring only straightforward single-yarn knitting. The pattern includes five sizes to fit women's hands with circumferences ranging from 17cm to 21.5cm (6¾ to 8½ inches), making them suitable for XS through XL hand sizes.
Techniques Used
The Double Take Mitts employ a color pooling technique, where working two rounds per color allows the stitch pattern itself to create the illusion of intricate colorwork without the complexity of traditional stranded or intarsia knitting. This method lets knitters achieve a sophisticated dotted pattern effect by simply changing yarn colors at regular intervals. The pattern uses standard flat knitting techniques adapted for small circumference circular knitting on double pointed needles, making it accessible to intermediate-level knitters who want to explore color effects without managing multiple yarns simultaneously.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (p) – used for texture variation and pattern definition
- Knit 1 stitch below (k1b) – creates texture and helps manipulate stitch placement
- Knit 2 stitches together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Purl 2 stitches together (p2tog) – a decrease worked on purl side
- Make 1 and purl it (m1p) – an increase that adds stitches while maintaining pattern integrity
- Pass slipped stitch over (psso) – a decrease technique for seamless shaping
- Pick up (pu) – used for picking up stitches, particularly around the thumb opening
- Cast on (co) – the foundation technique for beginning the mitts
Materials and Tools
Double Take Mitts are worked in fingering weight yarn, specifically 4-ply weight, requiring 50 grams (approximately 210 to 230 yards) each of two contrasting yarn shades. The pattern example features Regia 4-ply in cardinal #1078 and anthracite mottled #522, providing a striking color contrast that enhances the pooling effect. Knitters will need two sets of 2.25mm (US1) double pointed needles for working the small circumference in the round, plus a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing details.
